Sam Bair of Shaler High School, Pa. will be crowned best miler/1600 runner this spring. I would even go out a limb and bet on his ownership of the fastest 800 time too. Anyone agree or disagree? Who else is a prospect in this area?

Solinsky will drop a badass mile time.
i completely agree.
No one care about 1600. No one care about sport of track and field. Get a life and study academics. NO ONE CARE ABOUT SPORT.
Take Ah's advice and quit sport. You will find that life is much better. Ahhhhhh...
Curtis will go around 4:03 in the mile and drop bair agian, Jesperson will go around 4:05 as will debole, Bair, and the rocket.
I look for Solinsky to do no worse than 4:05 in the mile. His best last year was a 4:08 and he is at least 12 seconds faster in the 5k than he was the year before--arguably 20 seconds faster. I think him and Bobby Curtis are the only 2 who have a decent chance at cracking 4 minutes in the mile. And I think Chris Solinsky will do it if he focuses on the mile--which I doubt he will. Solinsky's best 3200 was 8:48. I think he will be shooting at getting under 8:40. Who can say about the 1600? Curtis is the man to beat.
Any relation to Sam Bair who ran the mile in 3:55 or so in the 60's?
that is his son. so yes they are related
That makes the Sam Bair in high school a Jr. I am a Jr and I hate it--but I will be rooting for Sam Bair, Jr. to make his Daddy proud. Methinks he'll have to run under 4 flat to beat out Curtis and Solinsky in the 1600. I think the 1600 is like 3 yards short of a mile--correct me if I am wrong.
No doubt in my mind that Solinsky will run 13:40 this year. You can see it ready to happen.

Yeah, right after he slugs his 80th MLB homerun.
Sam Jr. (actually the III) is a SENIOR and I would look for him to go around 4:01-2 after having ran 1:50 in the 800 last year. As a Kent alum, I'd like to see him follow his Dad's footsteps in that regard, but it remains to be seen what he will do. I like what a DI coach in that area told me once-"I'm not that hyped about Sam, I mean, what you see is what you get"-as if to imply that he won't continue to improve at the collegiate level. His improvement curve might not be as big as his dad's who went from about 4:20 to 3:58 while at Kent and then down to 3:56 post collegiate, but I'm sure he will continue to get faster on the next level.
It sure looks like we are in the midst of another "Golden Age" of hs male distance running in which you consistently see guys under 4:05 year in year out with some even flirting with 4:00.
Looking forward to many great performance on all levels in the US in 2k3!!
With 1:50 as a junior in high school, there is plenty of speed for the 1500/mile and further improvements.
that 1:50 he ran was incredible too. almost exactly even splits- like 54 high and 55 low.
he capped off that same night with a 48 split in the 4x4.
he's got speed and strength, definitely a tough kid to beat.
coop, where you at the Butler invite when he ran the 1:50 and 48 split? I was, it was amazing, im sure glad i only ran the 4x800 that day too
WPIAL for life!!!
Unless Mr. Bair must bust out the pump. The kid has problems...asthma. And to say that he has strength? He has no strength....what place did he finish at state xc's? Or the meet before state xc's? Strength...no. Speed yes.
What will he do? He won't amount to anything because he'll soon find out that he must earn respect before respect is given.
Truth shines back like no other language when the silver-backed glass speaks.

OK. The 1600m is 10.219yds short of a mile.

at states he had asthma, at the meet before, he won.
yes, he does have strength, all of his races are won by going out hard and burning everyone else out. he's a tough kid.
I recall him losing more than one race during the season. When one has not proven that he has strength, it seems odd to say that he has strength. Beating a bunch of local runners into oblivion does not prove anything.
When the test was given last year and this, he failed both times. Last year the excuse was he wasn't a xc runner; this year it is asthma.
What will it be when the college who pays lots of dollars for him to attend finds out the kid is a handicapped, choke artist?
