ya some of them are nuts. in my personal case i was a good not great but good runner in grade 9 and 10. i then quit running for an entire year so i became pretty terrible. but i had a good runner in there and trained very hard. still not a 14:30 guy tho.
We had a number of guys run under 14:30 recently
HS PR's in 1600/3200->College PR's
4:24, 9:36->14:07 (3:47 1500)
4:40ish, 9:56-> 14:24, 30:12 10k
4:31, 10:01->14:28 (3:45 1500, could split sub 50)
4:38, 10:08->14:28 (3:47 1500, could also split 48 in the 400)
The last two were almost certainly 14:15 guys but very sparingly ran the 5k, as they were more 800/1500 types

How fast?
Ran 9:38 (2 miles in HS) - very little mileage. Our coaches didn't know squat about running (same guys coached football and baseball - one of them was a former MLB player for Milwaukee). Workouts were 8 x 440 at whatever, then we were done. In college almost dropped dead as a walk on, not being able to run 5 miles at a decent pace at first. Ended up running 14:17 as a college senior. No world beater, but much faster than I thought I would ever be.
9:47 for two miles in HS, 14:31 5k in college, 13:56 5k PB.
HS: 1600 - 4:36, 3200 - 10:02
College: Mile - 4:06, 5k - 14:10
Granted I lived at altitude in HS, but I ran 10:02 4 times.
HS 3k: 8:58 (roughly a 9:36 3200). Great HS coach, 25-30 mpw.
Post-Coll 5k: 14:35 road (completely alone chasing lead bike.)
Still got a few PRs in the tank, I hope.
