My training partner is 40 years old. He absolutely dominates the Masters competition at every race we go to. His most recent race was a 16:02 5k and our training is not geared towards the 5k at all. He is currently in 1:11 half shape and probably 2:32 or so for the marathon.
This afternoon he ran two 800s in 2:31/2:27 followed by a mile in 4:43. Rest between each was a mile at 6:00. This capped off a 108 mile week. A few weeks back, we ran 8 miles alternating between 5:15 and 5:42 avg and he had no problems. I can't help but think that he must be getting up there with the best Masters in the country.
I believe that his best event is the 5k. It seems like he could threaten 15:00 with a few months of specific training. I bet he is near 15:30 shape right now. He insists that he is "slow" and that he needs to stick to the longer stuff. He even entered and won a couple of ultras a couple years back. Please respond to tell me that I am correct. I would also appreciate some sample 5k workouts for someone coming down in distance. Thanks!
