she also saved her contract from a potential reduction, as it's been a few months (or more) since she ran a race, which means she needed to run one before Q2 ends, or she'd prob get a contract reduction. smart move on her part, and actually works well for asics, as they actually get some good press from it. ha, pretty awesome really!
Ummmm, what? Did you just totally make that up out of the blue?

At 48 and 180lbs, this is much faster than I could run now...

Yes, yes! And what about all those other women who are running at the risk of their uteruses falling out. Thank God for big, strong men like you to be thinking of the fairer sex.
I love that feminism hysteria has gotten so extreme that expressing concern for unborn children is interpreted as misogyny...you're the one spouting mindless drivel.

She ran 2:32 bro. She wasn't getting tangled up or tripped by other runners.

If she turned up to jog around then fair enough have a moan but 2.32 at that stage of her pregnancy... Damn!
That is pretty solid.
Didn't Paula R run a 10K when she was VERY pregnant? Seems I remember that she still beat my PR at the time but I cannot remember her time.
I wonder who the faster pregnant runner is.
I don't think this is a big deal either way, but I lean a little more on the side of the posters saying this thing detracts a little bit from the spirit of a national championship. yeah, montano may have earned her spot, but racing in any condition where one is certain to perform at a very low level relative to the other competitors (regardless of the reason), adds an element of silliness/arbitrariness to the race. sure her move may be inspiring and/or impressive, but not in the sense of running an extremely fast 800 meters relative to the rest of the women in the united states, which is what this event is supposed to be about. this is an elite athletic competition, not an episode of oprah.

OMG! You're right! How could I forget about the unborn children! Thank the good Lord above that we have stand up citizens, such as yourself, who are thinking of them on behalf of ignorant mothers-to-be everywhere.
Is there an interview with AM? I would guess part of her reason is to demonstrate that, unless there are specific Dr.'s orders for bedrest due to complications, it's perfectly okay and healthy to exercise during pregnancy. She obviously held back because it wouldn't have been safe to go all out, but for her a 2-lap brisk jog is no big deal.
There's way too many people who are misinformed that exercise is dangerous for pregnant women, when in fact it's far more dangerous and unhealthy for the fetus if the mothers do NOT exercise, and to be overweight during pregnancy.
So yeah, Montano is awesome to do that.
They were just talking about this on CNN - and the impacts of exwecise on pregnant women - and they did a live interview with AM for about 10 minutes. She garnered the biggest exposure for the meet and ran the slowest time ! LOL - Good on her. Any publicity is good publicity for T&F.

This is also my take on this. On the one hand, I have no problem with AM getting attention and the people in the stands being entertained. On the other hand, this is a national championship, for most competitors arguably the most important event of the year. I can perfectly understand when other athletes actually focused on competing are not very excited about a demonstration that pregnant women can still exercise during their competition. To them, it might feel like a lack of respect and just the same as putting a clown on the start line next to them. Thus, I don’t criticize BM for what she said. And I don’t bash AM for her move either.
Had she fallen, the baby could have been damaged for life, if not killed.
It was a bad decision to run and to put at risk the life and welfare of her child.

This is why Martinez has a world champ medal and Mantano doesn't. One of them is a CHAMPION and the other pulls publicity stunts.
You have a champion who seemed bitter that she had to fight so hard in her preliminary round while the others coasted. Did B-mart's heat get stacked because AM's seed time artificially altered the distribution of athletes across the heats? that's the only reason I can think that she was so upset. Otherwise, she's being incredibly petty. Compare that to Ajee's reaction, which was light spirited and supportive.
By the way, Martinez as "Champion": She has one gold medal and that is the world relays gold. No national titles. Montano is running out of fingers to count those.
I agree with Floto.
Personally I've never been a fan of Montano and I honestly did feel like her running did detract from the seriousness of the event but on the other hand it is nice to see track getting more publicity no matter how it comes about and she certainly has earned the right to compete regardless of her current condition. The thing that bothers me most is people getting upset at Martinez, I think there is a logical thought process behind either praising or chastising Montano and if Martinez believed that Montano somehow belittled the importance of a U.S championship, then there is no reason she should be expected to give praise to her, if anything I felt that Martinez did a good job of taking the high road and not speaking against Montano while also making it clear that she (Martinez) didn't think that Montano was helping the sport by running 2:32 (regardless of whether or not it is an impressive feat).
Good think Montano isn't a pole vaulter. Props to her though.
No matter what your thoughts are about Montano racing pregnant and attracting attention, you have to bear in mind that she had every right to do so. Also, as of 4:00 PM today, her name was one of the most searched in the world...not bad for a sport begging for attention. As long as she is not hurting anyone...hat's off to Montano and even Vessy too.
