Did this guy ever pay up?
I think the early posters in this (2002) thread were overly optimistic that an effective test for EPO had been brought in. That didn't happen until AFTER 2004, the year in which El G suddenly retired despite at the height of his earnings potential, and the year that Bekele ran his ridiculous times.
.........
No LOL, he never paid up!
Finally Kenenisa states, "he has been healthy and with good training" before a marathon. Im actually cheering for him to win and break the WR just so I can say I lived to see him accomplish the same as Ingrid Kristansen (when she held the 5,000m, 10000m, and marathon WR simultaneously).
I like Eluid Kipchoge but want Kenenisa to win in WR so he can hold all 3 WR at the same time.
Wejo, when was the last time a male held all 3 WR's?
With Barega running 12:43 and two other runners right behind him, this maybe tge wakeup call gir Kenenisa. He really wants yo hold the 5000m, 10000m, and marathon WRs simultaneously. Bekele have list his fire to train like,he needs to but with his 5000m WR in sight, he may find the motivation to do the work to get the marathon WR before he loses his 5000m WR.
We all heard of the "40km tempo" run Bekele supposedly ran recently that indicated he is in sub 2:02 shape by sweatelite on Instragram. We all would like details; however, I do know that if Bekele were 100% healthy and devoted to the marathon Kipchoge's WR isnt out of a fully fit and healthy Kenenisa's reach. Will we see that type of Kenenisa again I dont know anymore but *IF* we do he still have 1-2 amazing years left in his legs.
VIPAM. I am honored to be a part of your amazing thread. This is literally the GOAT thread of letsrun. I hope someday people will think my threads are GOATs. I would be honored to meet you and go for coffee. We can talk about Bekele and get to know eachother.
That's nice Banana Bread.
Two athletes I'm certain if they found their dedication and fire to train again to be on top could return and challenge their respective speciality WR's: Pamela Jelimo (800m) and Kenenisa Bekele (marathon). Neither have trained like they are capable and its rumored Pamela is contemplating a,comeback. Had she never become complacent we would never heard of Caster Semenya.
Kenenisa still want to hold the 5000m, 10000m, and marathon WRs simultaneously but how hard will he train before time runs out im 1-2 years? He have the ability to run 2:01 low.
Can Kenenisa break the WR, yes he have the ability but have he finally trained for the marathon like he should and show up healthy?
The marathon world needs him to have a GREAT marathon sub 2:03 to add a worthy competitor to the marathon GOAT Eluid Kipchoge. If not the only person can beat Eluid at 2019 Worlds and 2020 Olympics will be Eluid, so come on Kenenisa run greatly and give Eluid a competitor we think could challenge him.
If Bekele actually broke the Marathon WR, we could talk about it on this thread and then formally submit the thread to the library of congress.
Lol funny Sir
bumping this
Vipam, really I don't know where these fake news come from.
One of the problem of Kenenisa is that NEVER he had 40 km fast in training. His best time, on a flat tarmac road, is 2:09:07 that he did in December 2014, while in his preparation for Dubai.
His preparation went well, and I supposed he was ready for running under 2:04 in Dubai. But during the race he started to have hamstring problems, had to arrange his running technique in order not to have specific injuries, and this provoked a different problem to his Achille's tendon.
For this problem, he could not run till December 2015, and after that period he had only one period of real preparation, 4 following months before his 2:03:03 in Berlin.
Every time he finishes a marathon, Kenenisa is highly motivated : if there is a big results, like in Berlin, for attacking the WR, if there is a retirement, like in Berlin last year or in Amsterdam, for coming back at maximal level. But his problem is that his engine and his mind are too strong compared with his current body structure, and he doesn't have the patience to work on his structure with the right graduality, in order to avoid injuries in his delicated machine.
In Amsterdam, he suffered for a block of the left hip, growing step by step after 10 km, till when his action became very tight and his muscles were no longer able to work with the right relaxation, that is one of the best qualities for Kenenisa.
Now we had a very long talk in Amsterdam, where I explained he needs to look at his body, and not at some competition : he is Kenenisa Bekele, not a normal athlete looking for some money only, and can run ONLY when well trained and totally fit.
If he is able to maintain the concentration in training for long time, without looking at some big marathon, but running a big marathon only when totally ready, he can be a big factor in Olympics, and can have some chance to attack the WR of Eliud, because his shape in Berlin for 2:03:03 was a GENERAL SHAPE, and he didn't do any workout of high specifity.
From the same condition of Berlin, with other two months of SPECIFIC WORKOUTS, he can run almost 2 minutes faster, and this means the possibility to go under 2:01:30.
The real question is : can Kenenisa be able to have similar focus, for so long time ?
Renato, I'm a big fan of yours. I completely agree with this post. I agree that he can get Olympic Gold and go under 2:01:30 because I'm his biggest fan and he should be able to do it. He always was the greatest. I want to meet him someday. Maybe all 3 of us could have coffee together. I can't wait to see him bounce back and sort out his body. He also needs proper coaching. Jos Hermens was a bit crazy and doesn't really do Bekele any favours.
Hi Renato, I was hoping you'd chime in after hearing you were helping with his coaching from Hermen's recent interview
I guess the biggest question is you say he is motivated after a marathon but do YOU think he can sustain focus for real training for whatever his next race is?? What's holding him back? is it his business or does he just not like marathon training itself compared with track training?
You also say he can be a factor for Olympics/WR which I really hope to believe since i'm a big fan but the other aspect which he may be running out of time is what is the selection criteria for Ethiopia for Olympics? is it one fast race needed before? a combination of fast times?
Further to last comment...Kenenisa himself must realize the end is near for his running career and these DNF's and injuries aren't helping. I would think for this last shot of Olympics he would push other things aside to focus on what needs to be done in order to be at top shape.
Do you think he should do some shorter races (i.e., Halfs, 10km) to keep his motivation/training up?
I'm very late but are there any Bekele's training hidden in the great thread somewhere? If so can you please provide the link or the page number.
Thanks in advance.

Especially the period when he was a beast on the track and xc (2003 - 2008)
