if forced in 2002 to put a large amount of money on Bekele either annihilating the distance records or not, I would have had to pick not.

LOL, well what you think about the matchup with:
Kenenisa Bekele
Eliud Kipchoge
Isaac Songok
Craig Mottram
Bernard Lagat
Augustine Choge
coming up this friday? I would be surprised if the MAJORITY of the race is ever slower than 12:50 pace, as Kenenisa shouldn't want to test Isaac Songok's kick just yet! Anyone give Bernard Lagat (running the 1500m Tues) a chance at breaking the American Record or winning?

Is Abraham Chebii in this race? I am really interested in seeing how his season unfolds.
Thanks Mesfin, I hadn't seen your post.
That answers my question.
WHO DO YOU THINK WIN? ( I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE THIS COMP)
I think Shaheen - he is real fast, this year (2x 1600m under 4:00min. with 4:00min. rest in training), he can run fast.
Ready for his personal best (under 12:48)
i think it will be a close battle and in the final issac songok will win
Sorry - love the 2nd post in this thread. Respect the strong statement, but a little off the mark.

now that they've curbed the epo thing, it will be a long time before we see 12:39 and 26:22 again...
white iferior in long distance sut he f*** up
It depends.. Kenenisa has beat Shaheen flat out on the 3000 indoor the last time they met on the track... Shaheen said he let him go and didn't react to his kick. I think shaheen is going to try and do this from the front. Instead of going tow to toe with Songook and Kenenisa...
Maybe he will take the load when it slows down at 4k.. like it did in Paris...
Kenenisa is vulnerable if he tries to kick from under 400 meters... he has to take it out from 600 to 500... If the Kenyans and Shaheen know this ... they have to work him hard before that and then pounce on him like Songook did in Oslo and like Chebi did back in 2003 on the same track.
This is a very interesting race. I think kenenisa is going to go from 600 and push them hard.. and maybe is brother is going to help him out by slowing the pace.. this race will be a mess
last week they through in a 68 second lap.. in the middle of a 12:51 race.. thats just plain wrong!!!
I agree that Kenenisa kick isn't decisive enough to let the race bowl down to the final 400m. He is by far the strongest/endurance wise athlete in the 5000m/10000m and should take a page from Hicham. Hicham had enough talent and confidence to train and take his race out from 500m (33%) of his race distance. Kenenisa could and should train to do that on his own in the 5000m. If John Ngugi (X-Country specialist) won Olympic 5000m Gold with nearly 4000m, why don't Kenenisa try a less dramatic/distance drive?
I think the Ethiopians would love for Tariku to be a pacesetter; however, I don't think Tariku feels he should be a rabbit. Tariku already failed his brother by forgoing his pacesetting duties indoors so that he too could finish the race. If Kenenisa can get Tariku to pace him in such a stacked race I would be totally surprised.

When is Bekele's first WR attempt of the season going to be?
good performance by bekele, abreham did good job
looking at the race it looked like abrehams jump into the lead could have been planned... it definately confused everyone.. but Kenenisa slowly reeled him in.
Abreham did the same thing in oslo. i think he needs to delay his sprint and run his own race..
I have never been excited about a runner from ethiopia as i am about Mr Cherkose
BEKELE WINS DEEPEST 5000m RACE EVER
ROME (14-Jul) -- The deepest ever men’s 5000m, an American record in the steeplechase, a convincing win by Tirunesh Dibaba and a pair of world-leading performances highlighted the distance portion at the Borotalco Golden Gala, the third stop of the six-meet Golden League series at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.
Kenenisa Bekele proved to an all-star cast that he is still very much “the man” in the long distances. With a long sustained kick, the world record holder handily held off strong homestretch efforts by Saif Saaeed Shaheen and Isaac Songok to win in 12:51.44, leading a parade of nine others below 13 minutes, the first time that still-formidable barrier had ever been broken by ten men in one race. Though marginally slower than his win in Paris, his kick over the final 100 meters rendered Shaheen’s closing effort an exercise in futility. Nonetheless, Shaheen’s 12:51.98 was an Asian record –-but not a personal best-- while Songok, who handily defeated Bekele in Oslo last month, lowered his season’s best to 12:52.39. Ethiopians Tariku Bekele (12:53.81) and 16-year-old Abreham Cherkos (12:54.19) notched personal bests. Places five through 11 recorded the fastest-ever times for those positions.
