i think after 300+ posts its about time we stopped talking about it and actually see it happen, i think he can do it.

I have no doubt in my mind that Haile Gebrselassie will run 26:19...
Well, the 12:49 that he run indoors is no joke. Consider this... that is his fastest 5000 time and it came indoors. He was spent after it. He has shown once that he came through on an attempt so my inclanation is that it will be a 12:38.
It will be interesting to see how many people will be pulled to good times (sub 13) at this event.
Thanks to Geb Hengelo is the one of the best small meets out there.
I too think that Haile will again be in shape to threaten his 10000m world record and it will be interesting to see if Haile or Kenenisa will end up with 10000m WR by the year end. The 5000m WR may have only Kenenisa to attack it this year, does anyone know if another athlete besides Kenenisa have plans to attack the 5000m WR this year?

Lets not forget Eluid Kipchoge (although he may be a one hit wonder) chebii seems to be fading.
El G is always up for it and i think that he will get to the low 40's easily.
Another dangerous guy is seleshi sihine. I think this guy will make some major improvements with Gebre Gebremariam.. but they may never break records like kenenisa
Look out for Tariku Bekele... Kenenisa's younger brother. He is in 13:10 shape and is only 16-17 years old!!!!!!!!!!!
In two years this kid could be a major star.

World 5000m record under threat in Hengelo? Grand Prix Preview
Friday 28 May 2004
In the Dutch town of Hengelo on Monday (31 May) at the Thales FBK-Games - IAAF Grand Prix - meeting, the men?s World 5000m record comes under the shadow of the latest Ethiopian distance running maestro Kenenisa Bekele.
Bekele the World 10,000m champion and world record holder for the indoor 5000m has more than proved his track credentials in the course of the last 12 months.
The master of the mud, the greatest ever cross country runner, the unique winner of three World Cross Country doubles, Bekele with his 10,000m gold and a gutsy 5000m bronze run in Paris Saint-Denis last summer is now just as potent a force on the rigid confines of a 400m track as he has across the country.
Bekele unlike his mentor Haile Gebrselassie the reigning double Olympic 10,000m champion, also carries the mark of an all-terrain vehicle. Even the great Haile could never string together triumphs indoor and outdoor with cross country success.
Gebrselassie though still holds the outdoor World records for both 5000m and 10,000m, and it is to the former of these the 12:39.36 which he set in Helsinki on 13 June 1998 that Bekele will turn his attention at 19:55hrs local time on Monday night in Hengelo?s Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium.
Anybody who witnessed Bekele?s majestic stroll to double World Cross gold in Brussels at the end of March should need no convincing of his potential to unseat that mark.
If there are any doubters Bekele?s own words after his recent victory at the Ethiopian Championships in Addis Ababa should convince them ? ?My manager Jos (Jos Hermens) and the organisers have arranged for me to try and break the World record in Hengelo,? he said. ?If the pacemakers and the weather are OK, I believe that I can try to achieve that.?
From what I hear Kenenisa's averaging 52 sec. for his 400 meters track workouts and he is in best shape to break any record so the only question I have by how much, not if he is going to break it.
More than anyone.. i think shine has a neack of cracking records. but he has to run by himself to get them. his closing speed is not like kenenisa. Kenenisa is a tank...
More on tariku... he ran 13:52 in addis and finished 4th. beating some major stars. i think we have to wait to see him mature.. but i hope he makes it to the junior team.
12:37.35 I guess the record assaults offically begun this year.
2004 5000m races:
12:49.60 indoor world record
12:37.35 outdoor world record
12:37.35
Man he did it outdoors in his first attempt at a 5000m world record attempt-now look at all the Kenenisa threads popping up with all sorts of accolades! Its interesting to go back and read all the things people (some regular posters) said during this thread.
12:37.51 my WR prediction
12:37.35 Kenenisa WR actual run
not too bad! What about Isabella Ochichi, Eluid Kipchoge, Brimin Kipruto and Alan Webb they had a great runs to-but Hengelo 2004 belonged to Kenenisa.

This man is unbelieveable and to think he isn't even 22 years old. I don't know how else to describe Kenenisa he is a near perfect prototype for distance running. Thanks Vipam for starting this thread.
Another of my predictions that most people won't agree to is that Kenenisa will SHATTER the 10000m record with decent weather and good pacing to the tune around 26:15. I know for a fact Kenenisa isn't trying to shave the records he wants to destroy them when he attempts the break them. Later!

titles-- yes; records-- no...
now that they've curbed the epo thing, it will be a long time before we see 12:39 and 26:22 again...
This post was made on 12/23/2003.
So a year and a half is officially a long time.
Ultimate 5000m = 12:30.
60s pace the whole way. 2:30km pace. 3 4minute miles Back-Back-Back. 50years ago, the fastest man did 1 at that pace, now we are looking at a man only in his early 20s to do three?
After his recent WRs, is it time for this post to be put to sleep? or will it live for ever more?
Ultimate 5k would be 12:25.645, 5K @ 4min/mi.
Jzs
How do you figure that 5000m is 3 miles or 4800 meters plus 200 meters which figures out to 12:30 at 4:00 minute pace. The 12:30 will be approached by Kenenisa but that 12:25 is out of even his reach.
-------------
To the individual who said Tariku Bekele ran 13:10 at 16/17 years old. Tariku just recently turned 17 in January of this year and last year only three juniors ran 13:10 or faster Eliud Kipchoge (Ken), James Kwailia (Ken), Geb Gebemarium (Eth). Tariku did run a fast 3000m for a 16 year old 7:54.71!
Vipam
one mile = 1609.344meters
5000 meters / (1609.344 meters/mile) * 4:00/mile = 12:25.645
Whoa great job Jzs and Sloth you guys got me on that!
-------------------
Tariku Bekele did not run a 5000m at all in 2003 but he did place 4th at this years Ethopian Championships beating some more experienced athletes.
-------------------
Kenenisa Bekele won the Ethopian Championships 5000m beating Sileshi Sihine (who beat Kenenisa there last year) and Kenenisa broke Sileshi meet record in the process sometimes last week! Kenenisa has risen to another level from last year but Eliud Kipchoge seems to be gearing for an epic battle with Kenenisa in 2004.
Who will challenge Kenenisa this year in the 5000m and then in the 10000m-make your predictions now?!

Thanks Sloth,
