Galen vs Lagat? Sure.
Ed Ches vs. Lawi? Sure.
Mo vs KB? Sure.
But, not in this situation....
Why would I root against anyone that age? They are incredible talents that don't need any added pressure.
Have your own emotional interests, but not with these girls. Enjoy the moment and history, you douche.
You're right, lets hold hands and sing cumbyfinyah, that'll generate plenty of money for them to run professionally cause people really want to see that.
I could not agree more with Gotta be thin. Some of you, like these girls, grew up when kids were insulated from competition, judging performance, and success v failure. I am middle aged and grew up when, even at the youngest ages, every sporting event had a score and clear winners - and losers!
Comparing one athlete to another is GOOD - for event organizors, sponsors, fans, and especially, the athletes themselves. In any physical endeavor what an individual thinks she is capable of in isolation is nowhere near what she is actually capable of if pushed. I'm no pitchman for crossfit but that is the lesson learned from holding something heavy "for as long as you can" and then beating that time by several seconds a few minutes later. Without rivalries and losses, neither young lady will ever approach her physilogical maximum potential.
I also agree with posters who believe Alexa is a little more endurance and Mary is a little more speed. When we look back years from now, Mary will have the best 800 PR and Alexa will have the better 5k.
All this having been said, I root for Alexa for many of the reasons stated above. Less hype, swagger, Nike factor. More accessibility, humility, grassroots approach. A year younger, right?
