My hometown team THE BROWNS must go. Insensitive to african americans, especially the cast of Tyler Perry's MEET THE BROWNS.
The other sports teams really aren't getting any complaints.
The examples are pretty dumb.
The Braves and Chiefs are pretty positive terms.
The Indians are a mis-classification that was written in the US Constitution.
I can see that name being changed down the line.
The N word that is offensive today was not so offensive in the past.
Not when Mark Twain put it in Huck Finn.
But the connotation has evolved and it is now one of the worse words you can utter.
Even negro is frowned upon and it is written on my wife's birth certificate.
Put negro on a form now and it will get complaints.
Redskins, like negros, was OK when the team was formed.
Over time it has built a negative connotation.
It just seems ridiculous to have it now.
Snyder has to be the one to change it, and I think he will.
But it will be for business reasons.
Which is fine.

TAA wrote:Yes, we should change everything that might be offensive. I really wonder who these people are. They have nothing better to do with their lives other than b!tching about the name "Redskins." It doesn't affect their lives or rights in anyway, but we're offended so it has to be banned. If someone named a team the crappy crackers, I wouldn't give two shits because it doesn't change my life in anyway. People who are offended need to stop being little babies and get a life.
Why are you so upset about this? Today it's silly to have a team named redskins. Years ago, it was not so silly. Years ago nothing derogatory was meant when the word retarded was used. Now that word is out of favor and is used sometimes as an insult. Words change over time, it's not all that unusual.
In the Redskin's case, it started out as a name. Not a word.

I am an identical twin and deeply offended by the Minnesota Twins. Twins: We're people not mascots!!
Twin: something containing or consisting of two matching or corresponding parts, in particular.
The twins aren't name after you - duh! They're name after the twin cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you want the name changed, you'll have to convince everyone in America to stop referring to Minneapolis and St. Paul as the "Twin Cities." The word "Twin" isn't mutually exclusive to people born at the same time.
I know you're being silly and think you're trying to make a point, but...
Do they name geographical features after triplets? No! So why are they allowed to name them after twins?
Of course we should. Because there's no space between calling teams redskins, n*ggers, slant eyes, and having the teams named cupcakes, positives, and so forth, we have to pick one direction.

Ahh, almost 4 hours later and this is still up. Great job mods. I've reported this post multiple times.
I love it they got right under your...red skin. Stop whining you make people dislike you by your constant complaints. It would be something else if people were singling them out and persecuting them through punitive illegal activity like say the IRS did to conservatives. But even most Natives don't care "In the only recent poll to ask native people about the subject, 90 percent of respondents did not consider the term offensive." Grow up...the only people offended are a bunch of old senile men and liberal white college kids.
Let me guess, you're white?

The Redskins is considered the most offensive team name because it is a racial slur. It is the only team in the NFL that is a racial slur. None of the comparisons other posters used to 'offensive' team names even come close to the level of disrespect that the name Redskins demonstrates. If you don't think the name Redskins should be changed, what you are saying is: it would be fine if a team was called The Nig---s. Racial slurs have no place in sports.
Is it? I have honestly never heard the word used when not referring to the football team. That is the only context I have ever heard it used in. Ever. Maybe I'm sheltered or naive.

Want to change this? Here's what you as a fan can do.
1. Do not buy ANY NFL merchandise. It is not enough to boycott just Redskins gear, because this revenue is shared by all teams equally. Buy a Carolina Panthers hat and 1/32 of that goes to the Redskins. So NO NFL gear at all.
2. Do not watch ANY NFL game on tv. Tv revenue is shared, so the Redskins get 1/32 of this.
3. Boycott all NFL sponsors.
You could attend a game not involving the Redskins as gate receipts are only split between the two participating teams.
Personally, I don't care so I will watch the same amount of NFL football I normally do.

As I've already stated, the word "twin" is not mutually exclusive to people born at the same time. It means other things mainly: "something containing or consisting of two matching or corresponding parts, in particular."
Oh, and to answer your first question:
"The Tri-Cities is a mid-sized metropolitan area in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Washington, consisting of three neighboring cities: Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland. The cities are located at the confluence of the Yakima, Snake, and Columbia rivers in the semi-arid region of Southeastern Washington. A fourth neighboring city, West Richland, is generally included as part of the Tri-City area and region, as are a handful of unincorporated communities."

Me, too. I've never heard one person call another a"redskin" in a derogatory way. I have only heard it used to reference the football team.

Let me guess, you're retarded?! I mean really are you like 1/16 native american? I've known a few and they live up their injun blood for all it is worth. Kind of like Elizabeth Warren claiming to be native...it is a disgusting practice. Like I said even the real natives don't care. Now go and do something useful with your life rather than claiming that something that happened to your great-great grandpa has made you incapable of becoming anything worthwhile.
The Redskins supposedly have a 25 yr waiting list for season tickets. Maybe this controversy knocked down the wait to 24 1/2 yrs, lol.

You're progressive atheist god Bill Maher coined the term.
Hurts, doesn't it?
Even he sees how ridiculous it is getting sometimes.
This debate has nothing to do with religion, please don't bring your bigotry into the conversation.
