I have it on good authority that Ches turned 20 this Jan or Feb (dont remember which). So he is old, but will be 23 the end of his senior year, which is not unusual...he'll be way younger than BYU runners (cough Jared Ward cough) or people like Chelanga (26 his 5th year) and Kithuka (looks 30)

Ummm. Rupp was 23 when he completed his college eligibility in 2009.

The logic of this cracks me up. Let's say that he is 22-23. That means he is the same age as many collegiate seniors and grad competitors....and he beat them off of HS training. That would mean that THIS title is legit. The question is his future titles, but this logic actually confirms his superiority in this champs.

if you knew the way he talked to college girls you would not suspect him of being too old. maturity level certainly reflects his (actual) age.

There's a front page story on Edward Cheserek entitled, "Beyond his years."

Kenyans competing in U.S. colleges (and high schools) are a joke perpetuated on the rest of us by unscrupulous coaches and people trying to make a name for themselves. I have known quite a lot of Kenyans and they tell me it is possible to get a "birth certificate" at any health office as long as you pay them something. You can get any information (Names, dates, etc...) on them that you desire. It is even possible to get a "death certificate" for yourself, in this way. Coming to American colleges with these kinds of (living) documents is a pushover. All you have to do is take one look at Cheserek and listen to his voice and he is 24 or 25 years old, easily. In Kenya they leave high school at about age 19 and sometimes later. Bernard Lagat was almost 20 when he left high school in Kenya. Doing great things at age 39 (?) or older? Anyone ever heard of Eddy Hellebuyck? This guy was in his mid 40's and doing incredible things (doping) on the roads (where the money was, didn't venture on the track where I'm sure he could have run much faster). ?Certainly it is possible that Lagat is in his 40's and doping. Wait, what am I saying, we already know he is a doper. What might be Cheserek's motive for lying about his age? He wants a College degree from a U.S. school and why not be idolized while he's at it? He gets it all. If 23 is the cutoff (which it is not) and an age for these Kenyans to aspire to, then someone has some explaining to do at UTEP, Alabama (under Joseph(at) Walker, and any school in Arizona. These guys are great runners but a fraud and should be ashamed of themselves (coaches, included). Anyone who wants to take these 28 year old Kenyans' side, obviously has never had to line up with them and get their scholarships, places on the team, titles, and awards lifted from them.

If you've run against Cheserek, you ought to be around 18 or 19 yourself. Unless you're some unheralded child prodigy, you don't have a PhD in Biology or some other scientific field that would give you intimate knowledge of the many ways a human body expresses age.

What exactly is a "legit" birth certificate? And why is "legit" in quotes? You're implying that you believe the idea of there being such a thing as a legitimate birth certificate is suspect. That's all good and well, but I do not think it is your intention.

so Cheserek is 20. He's a year old. assuming his official age is correct. let's assume it is. Age-wise he's a sophomore. Lets not forget that he was competing at a high level in kenya several years ago before coming to the US. So he was already a serious runner in kenya by the age when most high school kids who go on to be great are just starting to run for the first time. Between that and him being a year old I don't think it needs to be some big scandal that he's a year old.

A kenyan who has been seriously training since early teens and is now 20 being able to beat NCAA competition isn't too startling. Although the fact that Cheserek has improved so much this year after his performances started stalling in his last year or two of high school is great for him. He could turn out to be the best men's champ in NCAA history since he already has 4 NCAA titles and his freshman year ain't over. great for him.

Ummm, as a senior Cheserek will be 23. Rupp as a senior was 23.

Liar. You've never met him up close, in person. NO ONE who has actually believes he's only 20 as claimed. He's probably 23 or so.

I've talked to him up close in high school and he's just as normal as anyone else. He doesn't look like hes above the age of 23 by no means. He's 5'6 and ridiculously small. It isn't like he has any facial hair either. You're just bitter because he's running fast in the ncaa's.

I don't understand why you idiots complain about his age. There are people younger than him racing on the DL circuit and doing much better. Why don't you people ask for their age certificates as well. Cheserek hasn't even competed with the intention of gaining age records so theres no need to unjustly call him old because he's fast. I wonder what you idiots would say if someone like amos, aman, souleiman, kitum, or even gebrhiwet decided to run in the ncaa just for an education. They're even faster than cheserek, yet no one seems to question their ages.

As for the people who always root for him to lose because he's foreign - it doesn't make sense because another foreigner will just step up and win in his absence.

Miles Batty had a legitimate birth certificate and he didn't lie about his age, his real identity, or his past high school (or collegiate!) experience. His parents paid taxes in this country. He grew up wanting to compete for BYU and in the NCAA. He understood and appreciated what all that meant. 30 year old Kenyans come here to exploit and to take, they care nothing for traditions and convention. Their coaches are just as responsible.

And you can verify this by how? Are you a doctor who can determine age by looking at someone? Kenya has in the past send "supposed" junior athletes who falsified their age to IAAF world jr. Champs. I would know, because I competed there the year they occurred. Ok. Credit is due that cheserek is good no doubt. But, first and foremost, he is and will always be kenyan. His entire background, like them was bred for running. There's no "dream" story here. Just an "average kenyan" (by their standards) who looks good in America. And what happens to most Kenyans who produce that early; those in Africa. They are never heard of again. Either way, it's sad that this site is set to destroy the credit of American born heroes like rupp & centro while they claim just another kenyan as a "king?". I personally know athletes from the Bahamas who ran track in America that have gotten "new" birth certificates so that they appear younger.
