Agree or disagree w Letsrun - Ohio State track and field is a joke

The Ohio State University AD oversees The Ohio State University's football and basketball programs. Do you really think he's going to care about a track and field blog post about a coach resigning?

Lost a coach to Furman because of better funding and now to an assistant position. Yeah, its a joke.

It has been said on other threads and in the comments of that story....OSU pay is for one gender only, not for a combined program like Indiana. $100,000 for a head coach of one gender is nothing to shake a stick at. It would obviously be more for a combined head coach. Combined assistants would make more as well.

A new coach will hopefully come in there and clean up any messes and keep that ship moving forward and forward in a big way. OSU can and should be great at track and cc. They haven't been in the 18+ years I have been following the sport. I know of a great sprint oriented coach from the area that would take the sprint program to another level. Have him bring in his guy for throws/distance if he doesn't like what is there and let OSU take off to the program it should be.

For a very long time I have been a track person around Ohio. It has never ceased to amaze me the arrogance of Ohio State athletes and fans, and the relative lack of success of many of their programs. Lets be honest - they have more money than almost anyone on the planet, yet do not achieve at the highest levels. Ohio State cross country and track should absolutely dominate the other programs in Ohio and the region. They don't. Certainly they have some outstanding individuals, but for what they have in funding teams like Akron and Kent State shouldn't be close - and they are. Honestly, the best thing that Ohio State could do would be to combine the programs, hire a dynamic and down-to-earth head coach who could galvanize the track community in Ohio, and then have their talented assistants sweep the cupboard clean of talent.

Mr. Squire has simply stated what thousands of people in Ohio already believe. Coach Beathea is a very fine person and if he feels that moving back home to Bloomington is appropriate for him and his family then congratulations and good luck. But I'm sick and tired of the Buckeyes being in love with themselves.

Given that I always disagree with LR, I'll take the same stance on this issue despite my utter cluelessness.

On the D1 level you are allowed 6 coaches for a combined program or 3 coaches per gender if you aren't combined.

So the same number either way. They are just being cheap.

They're a joke from everything I can tell; it's clear the school doesn't take it seriously.

I said talking to athletes and coaches, douche. I was there watching too.

For one thing, anytime someone writes "It's official" and then follows this with a subjective opinion, the writer sounds like a jabbering teenager. For another, it's not the track program that's to blame here, it's the athletic department, so a better headline would be "OSU athletics are a joke." To say that the track tem's a joke is disrespectful to the athletes on the team, who are innocent victims in this.

So basically Letsrun has taken a very simple issue and managed to misreport the facts in an effort to undertake OMG!!!! journalism. I have a feeling this is at least a weekly occurrence.

How many people care? Jesse notes the team has underperformed under the past 5 head coaches. If he is not performing why should he get more money?

Columbus local news did their 2 minutes on the state track meet this evening. Of course it was only to say how Parris Campbell (ASVSM) will help the FOOTBALL team.

The OSU is a joke in general - no need to limit it to the T&F team.

What do you get when you drive through Columbus?

Um, isn't it a NCAA violation to be talking to athletes before the meet is complete? I've been a coach for a number of years and that seems pretty basic.

Hey TJ, you said, "Glaringly absent..." They were there and following the rules. You inferred they were not even there.

And, they are there doing there jobs even though they may be out of work June 30 when their contracts end because a new coach may not be in place yet. So, TJ chill out.
