Very strange. At first, I figured that the guy was fired for skipping out on his duties while running the marathon. Under that assumption, the firing didn't seem completely unreasonable. Most of us would probably get in trouble for taking a day off for a leisure activity at a bad time.
But it seems like the powers that be are explicitly stating that he wasn't fired for shirking on his responsibilities and that he really was just fired for running the race. Like if he'd taken the day off to go camping instead, that would have been fine. Pretty ridiculous.
The AD does openly admit it's simply because he ran the marathon.
Is there any legal action this coach can take and possibly have success with to be reinstated or compensated for the improper procedure of being fired?
At a tuition dependent institution recruiting is more important than coaching. At the time of the recording he only had 6 incoming Freshman. That number is unbelievably low, and any coach in that position should expect consequences. Why as the AD would you keep on a coach that isn't recruiting, isn't retaining athletes, and does whatever he wants?
He deserved to be fired as he was not hitting his recruiting targets, had low retention, and couldn't follow departmental rules regardless of how stupid they might have been.
He has a large number of returners which means he didn't need to have a huge recruiting class.

Have you listened to the recording? If that is the case then fire him for having a low number of recruits, not running the Boston Marathon. He asks the AD if he would have been fired had he went out of town to visit his Mom on Sunday and Monday and the AD says no. To me that shows that it was clearly due to running the race.
This is a clear violation. He was fired because of race and that is not acceptable.
