I am sitting here watching the Today show and they have Johny Mathis on and he was introduced as giving up his chance at the Olympics to go after a singing career. Was he any good? The pic they showed was of him high jumping.

I think that he might have been Califoria state champion in the high jump. He was also supposed to have been a good basketball player. It ended when he injured his back. Had nothing to do with singing.
He jumped at least 6'5"1/2 inches (1.97m) in 1954 - so fairly useful I guess. The 1956 Olympic High Jump title was won by Charles Dumas (USA) in 2.12m.
Wasn't Johny Mathis a diver? Wasn't he the guy who hit his head on the diving board during an olympic competition?
Observer: no that was Greg Louganus
Who is a better singer, Ritz or Webb?
