not much. unless you are D1 head coach. 50k+ depending on experience
There have been some good threads on this before.
Generally HS coaches get paid a decent salary for teaching, and the coaching is an after-school activity that is for extra pay.
The good paying college coaching jobs are few and far between, and you have to pay your dues as an assistant first. D1 head coaches get paid the best, but they often aren't doing most of the actual coaching of the athletes compared to the assistants.
If you have the right degreeS, sometimes (meaning rarely but certainly not impossible if you plan ahead) in Division 3 you can get an appointment as a phys ed professor and XC/track coach. This will not make you rich but certainly pays better than the low paying real jobs of college coach OR phys ed prof alone.
Typically they make in the $7.00/hr range.
As a HS coach I make about 2k to 2.5k for coaching.
U of M 2013 SARAH HOMANS HESSER TWIN CITIES HEAD COACH $55,000
She spent like 7 years as a volunteer assistant and coaches one of the largest women's cross country teams in the country.
Amounts for our hs district - teams are single gender, ~90 kids/team.
Head(1) - $5900
Head Assistant (1) - $4400
Assistants (4) - $3900
I always love that someone goes right to the top when talking about any salary like everyone is f@#$ing LeBron James. Pat Henry has won how many national championships as a coach? So the answer is you can maybe make this kind of salary when you do that. Useless comparison. Please keep it to yourself.
Why did someone delete this thread?
College coaches usually make about $20-30k in their first year or two as an assistant. This is a full time job and doesn't really leave time for a second job to pay the bills. Expect to continue living as a college student if you get a typical assistant coaching job.
Assistant coaches with years of experience at a major program may make up to 40-45k per year.
Head coaches at small programs make $40k or so, at major programs they make about $100k-$150k if they come with years of experience and are considered leaders of some sort in the sport. Obviously there might be outliers making more at really top schools.
There is a wide funnel going to the top, this is why so many assistant coaches only coach for a few years, then move on to a job outside the university. There is a ton of competition for these jobs and a lot of stupid drama causing quite a bit of turnover. A well run program may allow you to be insulated from this drama, a poorly run program (exhibit: Cal) will have a ton of drama and coaches constantly being fired/quitting every year. You may have some idea of which type of program you are going into, but you also might not. A lot of it has to do with the administration, which the coaches may have no control over.
Btw, salaries paid for with public funds are public record. For example, you can look up salaries of all coaches in the University California and California State University system, it is online.

Beat me to it. What's nuts is that 315k doesn't even get you in the top 30 at a school like TAMU. You have deans and (distinguished) professors making more than that.

Well they likely generate more revenue for the college.
Coach Corfeld has accomplished a great deal in his 30 year career at UWM. Most notably, he works to recruit urban students from Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and gives of his own time to assure all students on his team keep up their grades so they graduate from college. Many people have given up on recruiting MPS students, which is very sad. I know because I am an MPS teacher and former coach and Coach Corfeld has gone above and beyond to help students make it. If you look at his bio, he has accomplished many things on a limited budget.
