so why don't the women run 8:20 and 14:20 routinely? There is a slew of women who can go 3.58 in the 1500m!!

those tables are comparing talent pool + perfect pacing
it's a bit easier to get ideal pacing in a shorter race than a longer one, although 1500 races have had really bad pacing last few years !
1500 is also blue riband event
it shoud attract best talent pool
3k races for women are now rare & as said, the pacing isn't great usually
the previous fastest race with szabo off 8'21 & paula at 8'22 again didn't have great pace : paula led at 2k with 5'37.01, which is only 8'25.5 pace but she kicked hard from there & nearly killed szabo with her surge !
this race had a 2k of only 5'37.32 which is only 8'25.9 pace but finished with a 61+ & 29.5 for helen !!!
just be grateful we got any sorta fast time today with only semi-decent pacing !
D!ckhead ... I didn't say anything about which year it was. I said "until he dropped a 12:45" - learn to read, peabrain.
moron
he'd already in '95 run 12'56.1 wjr in the race where moses edged him in a desperate finish to break wr with 12'55.3
he was damn unlucky to lose that race as he'd left it to last lap sprint but still broke geb's ole wr
he was an alltime great even in '95 when at just turned 19y he became 2nd fastest ever 5k runner & deperately unlucky not to have been full wr holder
did you see this race idiot ?
8:20 is as good as 3:53/54 for 1500, faster than any undoped woman has ever run, and worth 14:18, only bettered by the best ever, Defar and Tiru. These ratios are supported by the men's records: Komen's 3000 is widely considered at least on par with 3:26.
So 8:20 puts the w3000 on even par with the other women's events. Of course, 8:06 is science fiction, and even Genzebe's 8:16 raises my eyebrows.
D!pshit
If that 12:56 was still his PR his name wouldn't be in this conversation.
He didn't become "2nd faster ever 5k runner" ..... Do you know what the word "ever" means?
red flag since Genzebe was nowhere near 8:16....

How does 3.55 in the 1500m compare to 8:20 in the 3000m?
It's half as much and twice as least.
Ultimately this is subjective, but I wouldn't really call Longosiwa, John Kipkoech,Songkok or Alamirew "great" in the same way that Kipchoge, Sihinie, or Geb were.
I wasn't trying to make it out to be a hobby jogger time. My point was that more people could have run faster than that if they had better pacing or more tries. It's not a godly barrier that people make it out to be. I think Paris 2012 proved that. Same with the women's 3k in Doha. El G and Farah are two great example of athletes that haven't broken 12:50 despite obviously being able to.
I think Tim Hutchings said during the commentary that it was arguably the real world record.
El G and Farah are 2 examples of athletes that many people lump in with GOAT crowd.
Agree, it is subjective .. but there have only been 26 times 12:50 has ever been broken, and something like only 15 people? I'm not sure how someone who runs any time that puts them in the top 15 athletes of all time (based on PRs) isn't "great". There are something like over 6000 times under 13:30 .. and only 25 under 12:50 seems to suggest it's pretty challenging effort.
Longosiwa has an OG Bronze and sits 10th (?) all time fastest 5000m runners, 6th fastest times ever indoors? That's pretty badass. He's not Geb or Komen, but it's better than all but 10 other people in the history of track.
Paris did shake things up, which is good .. kinda like Doha did for the women's 3000m, so I think that's a good analogy. But it doesn't take away from the fact that those folks are still among the very few fastest of the very fastest athletes in the world.
Correction.
Mary's 8:25 was Rome '85, but Grand Prix.
Not WC.
Sorry.

as of end of 8th june '95, he became an alltime great
at start of day, wr was geb's 12'56.96
at end of day, the alltime list was :
12'55.30 - moses
12'56.15 - komen
12'56.96 - geb
that made komen "2nd fastest ever 5k runner" or can't your peabrain even understand this most basic concept ???
Vent
Please google the word "ever"; it doesn't mean what you appear to think it means.
