More and more distance runners are realizing that if they want SPEED, then jogging long miles isn't going to help. There's a movement in the distance running community towards incorporating more HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) and use of non-running methods of building running strength. All good runners know that 200s are good for speed work, and that without doing speed work you won't have a kick at the end of your race. Especially at the level that Galen Rupp is running, and considering he runs the 10k and 5k on the track (both of which require a lot of leg speed) of course he's doing 200s. 200s aren't specifically "CrossFit-style sprints" like you say they are they have always been a repeat workout distance runners you to work on leg speed for finishing a race or closing gaps in races quickly. The same thing goes for the Asbel Kiprop video. Jumping rope builds fast reaction capability for toe push off and stability in your ankles. Both lead to better leg speed on the track.
