What's the latest word on Track Regional Qualifying for 2003? Where are the meets being held for each region?
I heard from somewhere that the eastern regional meet (basically the entire eastern seaboard) is going to be held at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA (20 min from Wash D.C.), due to its central location in the eastern region and access to two major airports (iad and dca) and many hotels. GMU just recently put up stadium lights around its track so distance races can be held at night.
The word on the street is that the mid-west regional is at Nebraska. Also from what I have heard (I am a DI distance Coach) the system is pretty unorganized at this stage! For instance, the first year of this system, the coaches have voted to make it a two day meet(later it might switch to 3 days). Now, we know that the only two exempted events are the 10k and the Decathlon(will still use the 'list' system i.e. top 28 get to go). That means a pretty fast 1500m, steeple, or 5k and then 24hrs or less later, you have to come back and race your guts out to be in the top five to insure an automatic spot. Really for all events it is going to be tough. I am a distance coach, but I have sympathy for some sprinters, I mean, if you want to do the 100m, 200m double, and you throw in the 4 x 100m for good measure, you are talking about 8 races in 48 hours. Pretty tough when you consider the level of competition, and effort when everyone will be fighting to make it to nationals. Having said that I like the system because it will weed out the good coaches from the bad. Two things will happen, first the coaches are going to have to peak out their athletes properly, this contrasts with many current coaches who just start throwing athletes into high caliber meets to get them qualified, and then hope for the best at nationals. Many times these athletes are worn out and do horribly bad at nationals. The second is that actual coaching interaction will have to take place with the athletes to help them advance. This system takes the uncaring coach out of the mix, because between conference, regional, and nationals, a lot of quality competing must be accomplished. The uncaring coach won't know how to get that many efforts out of the athlete and get the desired result.
Just A Fan!
Does anyone know (or have the June issue of Track and Field News) how far west the East region will extend? Basically the question is Tennessee or no Tennessee...?
Tennesse is not in the east region. The east region has far more schools than any other region - something like 130+, but Tennessee is not in there.
The east may have the most teams but for men the midwest region is far and away the hardest. Norte Dame, Wisconsin, Arkansas,Eastern Michigan,Indiana,Michigan,SMU,Texas just to name a few. Consider that the national champ indoors in the mile, indoor 5k,outdoors in the 1500, steeple,10k are all in this region. I would love to be at GMU instead of Indianapolis or Arkansas next spring.
Your analysis is extremely selective. For example, outdoors the east had the 1-2-3 finishers in the men's 800 and the 1-2-4-5-6-7 finishers in the women's 800. In the men's 10k, the midwest had a great showing, yet the east had 5 finalists and the midwest had 5 finalists. In the 1500, the midwest was also very strong, yet the east had 4 runners in the men's 1500 finals.
The midwest is a good strong region, but just as it doesn't dominate cross country, it doesn't dominate or outshine other regions on the track.
What a mess. Regionals only promotes mediocrity.
Don't you think the western region will be hard with Stanford, the AZ's? It will be hard if Colorado is in there do you know what region they are in?
and dont forget USC and UCLA. The women's team in particular are always in the hunt...
