Jim Spivey's personal best times of 3:31.01 and 3:49.80 place him second and fourth, respectively, on the all-time U.S. list for 1500 meters and the mile. He was the U.S. Olympic Trials 1500 winner in 1984 and 1992 and placed fifth in the '84 Games and eighth in '92. Spivey was a bronze medalist in the 1500 at the 1987 World Championships. He was an NCAA champion in the 1500 for Indiana University in 1982. His 13:15.86 for 5000 meters in 1994 is ninth on the U.S. list, and he was a semifinalist in the 5000 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Spivey is now head coach for men's and women's track and field and cross-country at the University of Chicago.
