I looked at this video 6 ways to Sunday, no way should there have been a DQ here. What a joke, the person defending on here is an idiot PERIOD.
Pretty simple here fellas- the DQ should stand according to the rule.
Sure, I get it, she would have won anyway....blah blah blah....agreed. However, the rules and enforcement of them at the big boy level is very clear. She wasn't thinking, made a mistake by setting up a pass on the inside of the track....did not take the time necessary to slow up and go around Jordan and as a result clipped her leg and impeded her stride. The real confirmation to me is that she almost does it AGAIN as she approaches SR for the pass....sets up to make an inside pass then awkwardly jumps to the outside just avoiding her trail leg. (this is what she should have done with JH to avoid an infraction.)
Whip out your NCAA rulebook and flip to RULE 5 Section 4 and 5. (roughly page 73/74 depending on what year your book is)
SECTION 4. Legal Running-
Legal Running Without Lanes
Article 2.
a. A competitor may run anywhere on the track at any pace or any change of pace as long as the competitor does not IMPEDE or OBSTRUCT by any body or arm action THE PROGRESS OF ANOTHER RUNNER.
SECTION 5. Article 3. The referee, after consulting with the appropriate officials, shall disqualify a competitor who:
a. Jostles, cuts across or obstructs another competitor so as to impede the other runner's progress. Direct contact is not necessary; ANY ACTION THAT CAUSES ANOTHER RUNNER TO BREAK STRIDE OR LOSE MOMENTUM is grounds for disqualification.
The above is quoted exactly as it reads. with capitalization added for emphasis.
Game. Set. Match. McEnroe.
