I lost 55 lbs in four months by getting on the treadmill 5 days a week, 1 hour per day, and walking as fast as I could. Started out like 3.2 mph, ended up about 5.2 mph. Then it turned out running was much more fun and enjoyable.

I'm watching someone on Letsrun post about a guy walking on the treadmill at 2mph. Why on earth would someone do this? Never mind that he could go for a much more interesting walk outside. He has to be trying to hard to be THAT SENSITIVE.
Has anyone else seen anyone do this? Any insight?
You're in the gym, with your cel phone, posting on a forum, making fun of a "slow" person, who is bothering to get off the couch. Who's the a$$hole in the picture?

I don't know, but I'm certainly the fool for bothering to read this thread and post on it.

To 'I kinda like running', I welcome your perspective.
With a sub three hour marathon at the age of 14, eventually running a 2:28 and at the age of 52 being a nationally ranked Triathlete I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 53. You learn to take each day one step at time. There were times in my recovery when I would have given anything to be on a treadmill at 2 mph.
The arrogance and hubris with which we are surrounded is amusing to say the least.
So he's not at home on blowing farts on a sofa? Good. At least he's trying to do something. Summary: this doesn't really concern you.
The dude is at the gym because he doesn't want to fork out $80 for cable, but there is a show he wants to watch, so he goes to the gym and walks slowly while watching the program.
That's like commending the guy riding his bicycle around town all the time when in reality he is only doing it because of 3 DUIs.

Yeah, you're a lost soul.
Im with the op. My fiance does this too..except at 3 or 3.5 mph. She also uses the eliptical at level 1 resistance which is like walking slowly downhill. She doesnt break a sweat. I run and lift weights, but she still looks way better than me. Its not fair
Are you kidding me? This is just unbelievable double standards. This is one of the most obnoxiously judgemental websites that I've ever been on.
Can't run a sub 20 (19, 18, 17?) minute 5k...? You're clearly not trying hard enough and don't know what you're talking about.
Trying out crossfit and fancy gaining a small amount of body mass...? You're an absolute prick and deserving of continued sneering jibes and criticism.
But wait! If you walk more slowly on a treadmill than you walk to a toilet then you are a special flower who needs protection?
I'm not suggesting that there aren't good reasons for people to walk slowly but that doesn't change the fact that this is a fairly bizarre spectacle.
I just don't understand this community. You 'hate' on runners and sneer at their achievements and yet are willing to vehemently defend a slow treadmill walker.
F U for not having any spelling mistakes. Bet you used spell check or a dictionary though. Biotch.

+1. Now THIS makes sense.
Or he likes the feeling he gets telling people he went to the gym, only he doesn't really like working out, so he just does 2mph treadmill instead.
Or he listens to the silly people on this thread who say "at least he's doing something", which is an attitude that does not help anyone. He'd literally be better off doing something completely sedentary that he enjoyed.
If you honestly think people should constantly mince around edge cases like yourself, when having casual conversations on anonymous message boards ... then you're about the most arrogant person I've ever heard. You have an unusual back story. People will fail to anticipate it. That is not their fault. Deal with it.Also, the odds are stacked against the 2mph walker being a former nationally ranked age group Triathlete recovering from prostate cancer, so your story, while stirring, is likely irrelevant.

so...you being a total douche a-hole prick isn't your fault?

Because no one considers walking at 2mph is any kind of "achievement." It is obvious to even the most untrained eyes that walking at 2mph and running at 10mph are totally different. So they don't have to put down the walkers to "distinguish" themselves from someone "inferior."
I read your judgmental post about the person walking 2mph and you watching. You need to learn some humbleness. I'm female, 65 and yes pretty overweight. and if i can get on the treadmill and walk 2 or 2.5 mph for 30 minutes I consider it a job well done. I'd like to see you at that age and see just how much you can do The point of exercise is that you do it. Thanks to the people who said he burned more cals than you did observing, or he could be on the couch eating chips. Encouragement and feeling good about himself is what is going to get him to stick with his program not making him feel bad. It really upsets me that you can be so disrespectful and so petty to another human. I was 30 and thin once too, and I never did that to another person to make them feel bad. I was an RN in a critical care trauma center and had to constantly lift, turn, and get out of bed young people who were unable to move due to car accidents and broken bones, etc, And I did it, with all their fixators and external equipment. So I got old So will you. So have a little kindness to people not as fit as you because you never know how you will be in their shoes. Kindness and gratitude for your physical prowess will go a long way, instead of showing off your fitness skills to someone who probably doesn't even notice you.
I was in a drug induced coma for four weeks. When I got out of the hospital, my whole body atrophied to the point where it was hard to walk 5-10 steps. After 2-3 weeks of band work at home, I went to rehab. They put the treadmill at .5 mph and a 1 degree incline. I did this for 10 minutes. Three weeks later, I was up to 3 mph. Many different people were in with me-cancer patients, bypass patients etc. Yes, it was boring, but the techs wanted to watch you every minute. They seemed just to want movement. I remember pedaling a machine with my arms.
For the first time, I ran into "something, no matter how little, is better than nothing." Perhaps this guy at your fitness center adopted this philosophy.
Why are you such a nosey parker? Maybe he is recovering from a major illness or injury. Maybe he just likes walking slow. As long as there is no one waiting for that treadmill it doesn't sound like he is bothering anyone but you.
I know this is an old post but it touched a nerve with me personally. I walk at about 2.3 or 2.5 mph on a 10-15% incline. My mets are actually higher than the person going 4 mph with no incline. Although I would love to pick up the pace, it's important to watch your heart rate and I'm already at 80%-90% my heart rate at that incline and speed. You know it's people like you who discourage people like me from going to the gym.
