In as much as any high school kid "trains for" two miles. He went to JR worlds in the 1500. He was likely training as your typical 1600-3200 kid who doubles with the 800 at some league meets.
Considering what his dad did at 5000, you have to wonder what centro could max out at. More importantly, if he can run even 13:00 or 13:05 full out, what kind of medal threat will he be at 5000 in a few years with his kick, temperment and tactics?

Stanford is for the B team. The big boys run in Europe where it counts.
This ^^^
Rupp is saving his energy for Europe circuit... Even Oxy is a warm up for Rupp and Farah
These Payton Jordan guys are the "B" team is such that they can't hang w/ the top Africans, that's all... nothing wrong with it... Rupp is just too elite for Stanford now... That 10k in 2010 was the last time he really needed to go...

I see one great runner (Kipyego) and some moderate runners. Sick is not the adjective I would use.
Are you kidding me? No way... The DL Paris 5k was blazing fast and even that stacked field only managed to get a 12:46... And even Gebremeskel the guy who ran 12:46 in that was only got a 26:51 10k last year... Mater-a-fact not one person last year got those times... The person that wins the WV or Olympics that year doesn't mean they have the fastest PR, it just means they have good enough times to hang w/ the top group until the last part and they have the sprint speed at the end to kick home (hence Farah's 3:28)... seriously who else in the field had a PR of 3:28 in the 1500m? That's a large majority of why he was able to win, even Galen Rupp's indoor 3:50 mile helped out... So no Farah is not, wasn't, and never was in 26:30, 12:40 shape, probably will never get those PR's either...

I'm not sure how far off that shape he's been. Watch his 26:46 in Eugene from a few years ago. It looked like he was doing a controlled tempo until the last lap.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbRBZE48vXkHe certainly had more in him that day. 26:30? Maybe not but almost certainly sub 26:40.

Yup. I was merely expressing surprise at such a debut, and considering he was still considered a 1500 guy back then. Since, he has actually been training for the 5k and racing it much more.

Jager and True can most definitely hang with the top Africans. Look at the Olympics for Jager and the last dozen xc/road/track races for True. You are right that Rupp and Farah may be waiting for sharp peaks at the Paris-London-Monaco Diamond League meets, but as a fan I would much rather see a guy like Ben True go out and run these races as part of his build-up rather than stay at home in an intensely controlled environment and do Salazar's secret workouts.
Pollen count is too high.
Why has no one mentioned Ryan Hill? That 7:34 in Boston was so sick. Only narrowly losing to Hagos and Dejen!

Did you just realize you included Jordan Hasay in your "moderate runners" description???!!! THE Jordan Hasay?

Some people have mentioned Hill, and rightly so, his future seems bright and this may be a fast summer for him. Jerry has a handful of guys that are probably knocking on the door of 13:00, and what's crazy is that is excluding Teg, Solinsky & Fernandez (is he running any more?).
Seems like there are nearly 10 americans right now that could potentially go under 13:00 this summer. And most of them aren't the ones we would have thought of 4 or 5 years ago.
Don't forget Garrett Heath either. He's having an incredible 2014 so far (Bupa XC win, 7:37i). I'd certainly expect his 13:20 PR to go down.
Agreed. I think these could all go sub 13:00 (I am not saying I think all of these WILL, just that this is the list of potential sub 13s):
In order of likelihood, IMO:
Lopez Lomong
Evan Jager
Ben True
Ryan Hill
Andrew Bumbalough
Chris Derrick
More of an outside shot:
Garret Heath
Hassan Meade
Diego Estrada
German Fernandez

Umm, Fernandez is not racing. Estrada has the best shot to hang with the guys up top, while Heath can certainly hang, at least for 4k. Mead would be a contender, but does anyone know what kind of shape he's in?
dont u remember the 2010 10k???

True just hung with an Olympic silver medalist last week. Think he's ready to step it up to the "A" squad.

To think can run near 12'40" is something reasonable, such as the possibility of running under 26'30" in 10000m.
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
