Didn't some dude(s) with zero chance of winning try this stunt at the 2008 or 2012 US Olympic Marathon Trials? Basically, had some website's name on their bib in order to get ad time in.

Way earlier, may have even been Charlotte. If memory serves he worked for Intel and wore a singlet with Intel blazoned in big letters and wore his bib below that. I think that was one of the causes of the crackdown on logo sizes in the trials. He basically gave them 16 miles of advertising before he petered out and got reeled into and went out the back.
The guy who jumped in front of Kipsang's WR had some website on his shirt.
If you were a buxom blonde, you could advertise for GoDaddy.com.
Perhaps the New York Yankees.
How much will you charge to just run in cutoff jeans and a beer helmet?

Winner! This is it. Or a full suit and tie with a beer helmet.
The legendary Glenn Randall?
Try contacting a second-tier shoe or sports drink manufacturer. They seem to be drawn to these sorts of stunts. As an added bonus, you'll force marathon directors to figure out a way to prevent advertising goons from ruining big-city marathons.
Talk to Altra. They seem to like that kinda thing and may pay you for it. Dress like a giant wiener and see if Oscar Meyer will pay you.
I think the sponsor you choose (or should pitch to) should be, shall we say "ironic" for the event. Think Slim Jim, Twinkies, Lazy-Boy, Southern Comfort...
He ran a 2:22 in 2009 years ago on a course THAT DROPS 1200 feet ! What's his fastest flat course? Like 2:36 from 2012? What's his fastest time recently? I'd be surprised if he could even break 1:10 in the half.
SO short answer, NO HE IS NOT A 2:22 MARATHONER. And he also probably never was a 2:22 marathoner.
There were literally 100s of better runners at Boston this year and probably 50 of those form the MA/Boston area. None of which felt the needed to get some camera time. And absolutely none are bragging about their times on their facebook pages.

Abraha Gebrehiwet Aregha got paid by Sony to run the first 10k of Boston in 1983 wearing a Walkman. The idea of Walkman was new and no one would've considered running with one. Now you rarely see people running without ear buds of some sort.
I think it is funny that you mention Altra, because the guy that jumped to the front at Boston (Seth Wold) works for Altra.
Regarding the legitimacy of the 2:22 that Seth ran, realize that he ran it on a course that finishes at an altitude of 4000-5000 ft (I was too lazy to look at that altitude chart to see the exact number). The course may be aided, but it is definitely not a super fast course. I can think of one marathoner off the top of my head who has gone under 2:20 multiple times at sea level, but who never broke 2:26 or 2:27 in Ogden. If anything I would argue that a course like Chicago is a minute or two faster than Ogden.
Best way to maximize your exposure and earnings potential as a runner is to become a 2:08 marathoner.
I think Asics already has a guy that does the sprint at first and then fades or quits every time.
Guy's name is Ryan something or other.

AHAHAHHAHA No Way.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAY.
His other marathon results speak for themselves and to the illegitimacy of his marathon PR. Runners from most other places approach there PRs with a sense of humility and would never claim a downhill race as a PR. For some reason, Utah runners love to claim downhill races as their PRs. It's strange and must be related an inferiority complex.
The point is that while he is being lauded by his Utah FanBoy club as some elite runner, there were 100s of people who actually RACED at Boston who would put the hurt on him in any race from 1 mile to a marathon, approximately 50 of those are from Boston/MA and went out there and ran for something greater than themselves.
You could always be a Featured Speaker like Dane Rauschenberg. Head over to the Lincoln Marathon next weekend and ask for pointers... I know I'm pumped to listen to this guy (http://www.lincolnmarathon.org/weekend/)
Although Seth’s blog indicates this was a just a fun experience to run with his heroes, he wasn’t neatly tucked it. Seth isn’t new to running. He was front and center looking for exposure.
That said, it is interesting that two of the overall themes on this board are:
1) Runners are starving and poor and are constantly getting shafted by sponsors
2) There is an unwritten code among runners on how to gain sponsorships - run very fast!
Obviously when #2 is used exclusively, the reason for #1 is obvious -most runners provide such little ROI for their sponsors. Granted, Seth isn’t sponsored, he works for Altra, but he gained way more attention and exposure for his company than the guys like Nick A or Jeff E did running 2:11 for their sponsors on Monday.
Bottom line: Seth didn’t hurt anyone else’s race and had the cajones to get exposure. Nice work.
Pick a race with Ryan Hall in it, take the lead and Hall will take care of the rest.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Rest in Peace Adrian Lehmann - 2:11 Swiss marathoner. Dies of heart attack.
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
