If that "1 km" sign is right she went through in 3:07 aka 5:00 pace.

Shalane is trying to be like all of those other past Boston winners who take the lead in the first quarter mile and blow everyone away for the rest of the race ... at least Desi is being smart
I see Shalane Flanagan means business. Seems she has a plan and she's sticking to it.
unoffical 5:10 first mile for Shalane.

5:09 shalane
Does Shalane look relaxed despite going out fast?
Shalane checks her watch...
if i can just keep this lead for the next 25.893234098237...
flanagan winning the BAA 5k
REmember the first mile drops nearly 200 feet.

Every 10 feet is worth 1.8 seconds accorind to JK, So that's reall not that fast except when you conider what it does to your quads.
Official first mile split was 511.
Why is Shalane leading so early???

She could win if she keeps this lead.
Very insightful
Some of these women have such horrible form.
Often times the women's race starts out at 6, even 7 minute pace. I would have thought Flanagan would want a race like that but I guess not.
Where is Desi? I don't see her in the lead group with Shalane. Is she leading the 2nd pack behind?
130 feet is not "nearly 200 feet"

she's pretty far back in the second pack...seems to be running smarter than shalane on this course...but she can't let shalane get too far ahead.
2nd mile 5:10 for flanagan as well.
