When I see things like this, I think of the famous George Carlin quote... "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that"

Yeah-sad-I met Bill in Ottawa in 1989 when I was 17 doing the Nordion 10K and he won the masters category in 30 minutes-he was the most down to earth guy considering what he had done...4 NYC in a row-victim of bad timing in the Olympics with the flu in '76 and the 1980 boycott. As discussed above he was the last one to self-promote.
The thing is, does this dean kanker (whatever) believe that he is better than Bill? Is his ego that big?
Simple:
Bill - runner and racer.
Dean - runner and mercenary.
Dean has done some interesting things, athletically speaking, but as a man, as a human, he is a fail.

That flavor has been around longer than a month.
And he has multiple books in public libraries to prove it.

How has he failed as a human in general? And, in particular, how has he failed as a human compared to you?
I met Bill Rodgers at a turkey trot in Ohio the early mid-80s. He and Frank Shorter both raced and went 1-2, miles out front of everyone else. I have no idea how they both came to be there. Anyway, I got third and got to talk with them waiting for the turkeys to be handed out. Both very impressive, nice people. Amazing how this sport sometimes creates situations like that, where you are meeting the equivalent of Babe Ruth, but all low key.

You don't know me and I am not going to enlighten you in that regard so the second question will go unanswered.
As for the first question, someone who lies and cheats and fools other people is, in my opinion, a failure "as a human in general".
that makes me sick. dk is the biggest self promoting jack@ss on the planet. lemme guess he ran the marathon and turned around and ran back to hopkington or some other douchebag look at me act like that?

Actually, that's exactly what happened. Just saw a friend-of-a-friend "like" a Facebook post by Dean K (or whoever runs his Facebook page, if it's not Dean, himself): "3:42 on the 26.2 mile run to the starting line, 3:25 on the marathon race back. Boston Double Strong!"

Bill Rodgers is one of the greatest athletes of all time. To think Dean could beat Bill in any distance (1 mile to a hundred) is utterly laughable. Here's the proof; his 1974 training log:
http://www.billrodgersrunningcenter.com/bi19rulog.htmlThe man lived high-mileage and was putting in 150 mile weeks and upto 35 miles a day. He could have easily transitioned to longer distances like Salazar did in Comrades, if he didn't want to run fast in shorter distances. No way Dean could compete with Bill.
Bill, so much Jamaica Pond... WHY?? I mean it's a great loop and all but.....

The good news is that you don't need to stand in line to talk to or get words of encouragement from Bill Rodgers. Just say hello.
I'd like to bring this comment back to the front. Truth right there. The most personable guy you could meet.

That's just the lingering bad taste in your mouth.
Bill Rodgers would have been tough at the ultras, had he chosen to run in them. He did not.
No reason to disparage Karnazes, though. He won the Vermont 100 and the Badwater 135.
He also ran just over 3 hours at New York a few years back, that that was his 50th marathon in 50 states in 50 days.
Publicity machine? Yep, but you could include just about any famous person who shows up on a talk show to push their product.

Most younger folks don't even know who Bill Rodgers is or just how good he was! A class act, always!
Correct. Many of today's recreational runners weren't wven born when Rodgers was dominating the marathon scene. It WAS a long time ago. I know it hurts us old timers' feelings when the kiddos don't know the heroes of our youth, but time marches on.

I'm a young guy and I'm going to say: If you have to promote yourself to make people like you... You're doing something wrong.
Another victim of the 80s boycott was Gary Fanelli whom I met when I was just some punk HS kid. He had ZERO reason to say anything to me with my 17min 5k. But I'm glad he did and we're still good friends. Guy is crazy, but FUNNY as hell.
We're still good friends now and that's GOLDEN compared to some Ultra guy who gave me a signed copy and would be too busy to say a few encouraging words to me because he wanted to run back to the start line...
Make your ACTIONS speak in positives. That's your selling point.

That guy is a circus clown. He should run in big floppy shoes and a red nose.
Dean is clearly superior to Rodgers in terms of PHYSIQUE, just look at that picture:

He's one of the few ELITE runners who realizes that CROSS training and SPRINTS are beneficial to the body.
