So take it a step farther and tell us your trajectory. Did you stop running after HS? After college? What can we learn about his progression and motivation to dope when compared to what you did with your running after the days you beat him?

I've met Andrew a few times, he comes off a that typical bashful humble/modest runner that is intense and going for it. He had a blog a while back and I got the feeling he was well respected by the community and the guys at the local running shop.
I had no idea he was using EPO and it comes as disappointing news. Obviously I'd much rather see a guy who is training his ass off and "going for it" be of stronger integrity to the sport and community.
But, I sympathize with his dilemma to dope. I'm sure he was under the "everyone at the top is doing it" mindset and that if he wanted to find his tipping point he couldn't do it without EPO.
The most disappointing thing, to me, is Andrew's inability to see the big picture. While he was/is a great sub-elite runner, he is far far from being elite beyond the NE Ohio local level. So, he took EPO to be the fast guy in town and now his name and reputation is tarnished. Its a shame and I bet he has a lot of guilt and shame to work through because of this - well deserved I suppose.

1:07, 30:00 and 14:3x are podium times in many, many local road races with money prize for the top 3, top 5 or top 10 finishers (or age group winners)
And meanwhile, athletes like him are the "WADA annual sacrificial lambs".
lol. first of all 14:anything wins 9999 out of 10,000 5k road races.
outside of two or three championship half marathons and 10ks, 1:07 and 30:00 will win prize money every time.
i don't ever run for money and don't race more than 5 or 6 times a year. ive run 1:09 and 30:30 and i almost made 2 grand last year. not unusual for those times.
hilarious how everyone who doesn't make the front page of letsrun is automatically "slow."
Joe Papp was the guy. People should google the story. EPO, Testosterone, HGH among other things are used often by top master cyclist. It is screwed up.
i didn't know him that well, but he was nice the few times we talked at meets. wouldnt have guessed he would be a guy who would dope, but like i said i didnt know him well
i was a low to mid 16 min 5k guy with decent track times
we were probably similar ability level
i ran d1. nothing special
i didnt dope

The real doping is going on at the master's level, where there's an epidemic of "Low T" *cough* legal steroids *cough*.
You are so right, my friend. Sadly it exists at the women's level as well (menopause hormone meds).
No, "go-juice" aka EPO is a science and this guy wasn't very good at using it.
Actually, Kenyon College is in Gambier, OH. That explains everything.

For what it's worth, I was the writer of this article on Carnes from a few years back. Did not think to ask him about PEDs at the time. Seemed like a pretty nice guy, but sad to see he got caught cheating.
Here's the team he runs on, take a look at some of the other athletes.

If you never run for money how did you make 2 grand?

Ah, another drug cheat on the masters roster.

How about a follow up story? Find out why he did what he did.
Could be an interesting article.
fwiw i remember 3 other guys from team ohio
each of were faster than carnes in high school, not that it means much
he beat all of them at club nats according to the results on the website
I'll second that. ask him, sounds like he was cooperative with usada, maybe he'll cooperate with you. tell him he owes it to you (and the public) to come clean on what/why he did.

I was just wondering if anyone has news about ROJO and WEJO's falling out. Apparently a training disagreement ended with WEJO nailing 95 workouts to ROJO's door.

LOL, from the article...
Carnes, 23, recently won the Akron Half Marathon in 1:06:48 which set a course record. He followed that up about a month later with a fourth place finish at the Columbus Half Marathon in 1:05:59. Columbus typically runs faster than its Akron counterpart, but it still shows a remarkable improvement in a short span.
2 drug cheats on a small Team Ohio roster? Sounds too fishy to me. The other guys should be put under much more scrutiny. The jr team are all in similar situations to Carnes. What are the chances that there are only 2 cheaters...
