Well, I lived with Shalane and if you think that was cursing, you haven't heard shit. Bitch cusses like a drunken sailor. I bet they edited half of her interview.

Its good for the sport to have mainstream media to a national audience with somebody who seems real and not the Lolo hype.
shalane looked good as usual. she is a down to earth girl and is competitive. that's what we need at the top.
COMPETITIVE.

Competitive with whom?
Americans, sure. East Africans, no.

Too bad she can't express herself without cursing. "I was pissed off". My legs said "screw you". Not the worst interview but disappointing she can't be a little more eloquent on national television.
anyone else think they asked her to play up her boston accent and say something all southy? She had a noticeably boston accent in that interview and normally she doesn't.
And the head of the BAA said 'wicked' which is like a jokey ironic way to use a boston accent.
I bet the producers asked them to sound bostony to make the story better.
I think the subtext here is a plucky irish kid from the streets of boston is awl gwown up and ready to rumble.
I thought the same thing. She seemed to lose the accent the more the interview went on too. I admit I probably have not watched a ton of Flanagan interviews but I was caught off guard at first.
If you are not capable of walking the walk at least you can garner some publicity by talking the talk.

Doesn't Shalane have a couple of medals in world competitions? She hasn't been in the running for a win in a marathon in awhile but it isn't like she is finishing mid-pack or anything.

You mean the girl who was born in Boulder?

because bronzes at WXC and OG and 2nd at NYC marathon is pretty much hobbyjogging.
And she was quiet prior to each of those events. Thanks for making my point. She was also quiet prior to Gate River this year and when asked if she was going after the AR she said " I don't know if that is realistic or not". She then went out and smashed it.

But grew up in Marblehead? That isn't exactly the mean streets of Southie but plenty of people from Marblehead have a Boston-type accent.

Obviously she believes she is capable of walking the walk. And why wouldn't she? I have heard of no injuries or anything else that interfered with her training. Last year she finished 4th and only about 40 seconds behind the leader. This is a hometown course and, of course, after last year she really wants to win Boston.
I bet if they interviewed any of the top 5 finishers from last year, they may say the same type things.
I'm concerned that they're setting her up for failure because she is not a favorite to win Boston. She might not even be the 1st American woman vs Desi.
However, when 60 Minutes wants to do a story about you and the Boston Marathon, you say yes. People complain about people ignoring the competitive side of running, about the media not covering competitive running, etc. Shalane is doing her part to let the public know that the sport exists and isn't all very fast East Africans and hobbyjoggers working on bucket lists.
Shalane also makes her living as a billboard for Nike shoes and gear. When you are offered the chance to be a billboard for your major sponsor on 60 Minutes right after the Masters, you say yes.
It's all well and good to say that runners should do their talking on the course, but introverted runners who won't talk to the press are exactly why people question whether money should be spent to support competitive running.
Anyway, I think she came off well and kudos to Jerry for appearing on camera. Maybe a few more people will watch the marathon, have a rooting interest in Shalane, and get exposed to the sport. That's all good stuff for the health of the sport.

She is trying to convince herself. She has huge doubts. You can tell that she is scared.
It's a good piece regardless of the outcome of the race. For runners and racers to be condescending and disappointed seems bizarre. It promotes the sport through one of running's more competitive athlete. If the community here on LetsRun cannot support this 60 Minutes story, then why should the public even tolerate the inconvenience of these events?
There's not a soul on this board who expects her to actually win. But if she does the place will absolutely melt down.

Not to worry. If all goes well, the mainstream media will go back to completely ignoring your little hobby in another week or so.

Let me get this straight, in order to get press we need to totally embellish reality? She will be off the front long before Boylston, just like last year.
