That being said, we weren't directly comparing England to a state- just the absurdity of breaking down the records into tiny pieces.

England has more than 85% of the population of the UK (53.01 million out of 62.2 million).

If the UK were set up like the US, England would be a super state. You'd have 85% plus the Congressmen form it and it as being one of four countries in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) would have 12.5 senators.

Only Ritz has run faster since after the 2012 trials. Only Hall, Meb, Ritz, Abdi and Gotcher have run faster times since the 2008 trials. Clearly, Vail is very much a favorite given how few others have been able to get down to 2:10. While London is a fast course, Vail did a lot of work by himself. With some people to run with, Vail should be able to go sub 2:10. Ritz, Hall, Meb and Abdi are all big question marks. Other than Rupp, no one moving up to the marathon has shown much promise recently. Vail will get invites to NY and Boston for good cash next year and will be a well seasoned marathoner by 2016.

Sell was 46th in XC his senior year, and I can't find any other NCAA championship results for him. I don't recall him being an all-American at the division I level. I know he started at a Div II school and transferred at some point. No one would have known him outside of runners in his own conference.

Again, Sorry you are completely wrong on all counts. He was an All-American TWICE. Once in XC and once in track.

He ran a 10k in 28:50 high and 14:05ish for 5k while training in Podunk, PA.

He was not a 'nobody', but a very, very solid national level runner in college. Was he an NCAA champion? No. Was he at the big meets competing well? Yes.

Brian Sell in my favorite American distance runner ever, but the idea that he was some 27:00 minute 8k runner while in college is completely false. He was a solid national class, sub 29 minute, All American.

Here's the deal, would you think a 28:50 guy has a shot at the Olympic team?

Hell, Chris Solinsky is a 26:59 guy and he can't make a US Olympic team.
