By asking "how did you do" you're giving the person the option to talk about their time. Asking for their time directly is about as invasive is asking about weight or test scores or income IMO.
This is probably the most polite approach. Manners aren't always logical, they're social customs, so it's not particularly important that their time is available online. Generally, when I'm looking to be polite, I try to craft my response to make the other person comfortable. It's about them, not me. In the vast majority of cases, I go for something that shows interest but is not overly specific. Of course, the specific context of the relationship is important. If I know what my friend was shooting for, or if I train with them, I can be more specific, because they're going to feel comfortable discussing it with me.
