Clyde Colenso SMU. !500m on a 350ish race 1999. beat Lagat and Lassiter
Juliet Bortoff... hot weather, slow pace, crazy kick - great racer but beat a lot of better runners

Word! However, Clyde was a 3:54 mile (sub-3:40 1500) runner.
Johanna Nilsson, Northern Arizona, 2005 XC Champion

Agreed! I remember watching that race on TV. Everyone was like "who's that guy?".
Abby D'Agostino. I mean seriously, who is that? jkjk she's awesome
there's so many. the "random" ones probably come close to outnumbering the "favorites".
Don Sage, 2002 1500m champ? The NCAA final was the only race he won that season, IIRC.

I'm going to 2nd this one. At that time she was not even on the list of top 8.
Angela Bizzarri...also the prettiest

Huh? You think Bizzarri's win was random? She was like 20th as a freshman, 15th as a sophomore, 6th as a junior, and then won XC. In the meantime she'd qualified for USAs in the 5000m and placed third before winning her 5000m at NCAAs and the XC / 3000m.
Natosha Rogers. 3rd 10K of her life and she takes everyone in the field to school.
Sam Burley
went from 22nd to 4th to 1st in successive yrs - not so random
0/10
Keith Kelly from Providence... Won xc nats, and am still wondering how

I ran college in the early 90s and follow the sport pretty well now.
I think that's the first time I have ever seen that name.
Obviously I didn't watch the meet that year.
But I know Lagat went on to run 3:30 that summer and 3:26 a couple years later.
And Lassiter ran 3:33, had a couple NCAA and USATF 1500m titles.
Seriously though Keith Kelly… Da Fuq is that?
