A lot of exaggeration in his statements since he is like a popstar in ethiopia so they need the hype. Same like the typical kenyan 'we go out hard and push the pace until we can not remember our name' talk.

So why is it people are running faster than ever in the marathon? Do they not test that distance?
It's because of Sammy Wanjiru. Think about it. He broke down the barrier. He broke down the wall. He went out with a 4:36 1st mile in a hot humid olympic marathon. He was on world record pace in terrible conditions for awhile into the race(don't know how long, I didn't watch the race).
Now athletes can say "okay, there is no barrier. If I train hard, on race day I may get very tired around 32-35k but I'll keep running, and at 35k I'll pick up the pace and break the last 1-2 guys and run a wicked fast time."
We all must give our thanks to Sammy. Thank you Sammy. May your soul rest in peace.
Didn't watch the race? You have no idea what you missed. Probably THE most incredible feat of distance running I have ever seen.
Sammy was a beast. RIP.
Yes, this is real exciting: Paris and London marathons so close. Anybody have any information on streaming availability? (including paid? e.g. online?) Or do you just have to be lucky and live in Europe with expensive premium television? Will race coverage be shown on any television channel on any of the premium American digital HD cable providers? I really want to watch these.

I have that race recorded (recorded lots of Beijing 08 t&f action), but I don't know if I've ever watched the whole thing and reflected on the race pace. I'll take your tip and have another look! And agreed, Sammy Wanjiru was a special fellow.
I will try to find a steam for race day. If I find one I will post it on the forums.

Paris is live on Eurosport, dunno if you can watch it on-line in US on Eurosport site. Have you done a Google search for 'watch paris marathon live on line'?, it ain't hard.

Looks like Paris is being covered by Universal Sports Network, but only available to people who have subscriptions with d!sh, DirecTV, TimeWarner cable, etc.--so, no beans for my HD Digital cable! *weep weep*
Looks like Universal Sports has a monopoly on the London marathon coverage in the United States, too. Da** behemoth corporate media.

As a matter of fact, it is NOT that simple to just "Google search" "it," as, these days, such events are tightly controlled Corporate media property, and you can easily get a lot of dead-ends. But that is a clever lead/heuristic--to look up the other coveraging organizations around the world and see if maybe they have a free or paid online stream somewhere available to Americans.
Here is a list of some such leads for the London marathon:
http://www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com/news-and-media/news-and-media/marathon-tv/I'm having more difficulty finding a similar list of coverage providers worldwide for the Paris marathon... will take some time.

Usually there is a stream somewhere.
Watch athletics is usually pretty good but doesn't always have everything...but even if that fails usually there is a link somewhere.
As I posted on another thread, it may be available from outside France at http://pluzz.francetv.fr/france3.

Ummmmmmmm... wat.
Anyway, it would be sweet to see KennyB win it to help build on his legendary status. I also like the idea of having another well-known name in the mix at the top of the world marathon stage.

I'll definitely give the links people have provided in this thread. When I have brought my own searching on the mentioned (London marathon) leads (Paris marathon searching still needed, complicated by the fact that I am not French-speaking) to a conclusion, I'll share any fruitful stuff I find on this thread. Thanks all
i watch most athletic events at:
http://www.wiziwig.tv/broadcast.php?matchid=190635&part=sports
it covers many sports , athletics is under the "other" lablel. make sure
to select the proper day and register to get times that correspond to
your time zone. it is also excellent for cycling. an hour before the
event you can select it and you will get a list of channels where
you can view it. most events, but not all, have at least one channel in
english. the paris marathon will come up at 2:30 am if you
are in the eastern time zone. at this time in the "other" menu selection for sunday all you can see is that it is covered. most uk channels come up here.
i have used this method for many years. i have never seen it blocked
under any conditions. best way is to register, and try a current event.
some of the channels may be betting channels so just try it.

In hot and humid conditions, Sammy went through halfway 5 seconds off world record pace. He ran off the front from the gun.

Good one.
It's listed:
http://www.wiziwig.tv/competition.php?&part=sports&discipline=other&archive=no&allowedDays=1Running 150 miles a week does not guarantee anything. Geoffrey Mutai runs about 194km (120 miles) and he is certainly able to clean Bekele's clock in the marathon. Also, there is something wrong if people are impressed with 150 miles. That used to be the minimum entry point for a marathoner in the 70s and 80s. Jerome Drayton flirted with 190 miles for a few weeks until HIS DAY JOB got to be too difficult with that kind of mileage. That's right kids, he worked full time and was running up to 190 miles a week.People are pussies now.
