I was at the meet. Baxter and Knights ran together for the entire race. The announcer said they ran 5:04, 5:03. I know their first two laps were around 70 and 2:24 (74).

Female HS running. Who seriously cares?

You, apparently. Didn't you recently click on a thread about it, then post on that thread?
Negative splits is very encouraging. There's plenty of time for a jump in improvement this season. It's not unusual for a hs athlete to improve 15-20 seconds between the first race of the season and peaking at the end.

Baxter ran a 15:57 3 mile xc last year without being pushed. I'd give her at least a 16:20 5000m track equivalent for that. McMillan says 16:20 = 33:55 10k. With four more seasons of xc and five more in track, she should be able to go sub-32:00.

Baxter's BMI is lower than Flanagan and both the Dibaba sisters. Sarah can run faster by being in races where she gets pulled along, but her fitness is very close to being maxed out at her current weight.

Please explain how you know this. Why can't she continue to get faster at this weight? There are plenty of people that weigh more and less than her and are faster.
Mary Shea, in her senior year at Cardinal Gibbons HS in Raleigh in 1979 set National High School Records in the 2-mile, 5,000, and 10,000. At a meet April 7th in Ft. Lauderdale, FL she ran a 2-mile (3218m) in 10:03.5 (10:00.00 converted to 3200), and 15 days later in College Park, MD a 5,000 in 16:13.7 (4/22). And on June 15th in Walnut, CA Mary ran a 10,000 in 32:52.5 (equivalent to two 16:26's back-to-back!) to break the National High School and Junior (19 & under) records (6/15). It was the fastest 10,000 in the world for 1979. Her US Junior Record lasted 26 years (32:51.20 Lindsay Scherf Harvard New York, NY 2005-May-07) and Mary still holds the National HS 10,000
Baxter will only get faster and training with the best distance coaches in the Country at Oregon. GO DUCKS

Were I to explain this I would risk my reputation of being the most interesting coach in the world, so I'll pass.
Suffice to say, her BMI has stayed within a range of 2-3% her entire HS career, as has her best times per year on the track.

That's dumb. Character is also shown when you are winning.
I'm disappointed to see that Knights is going to attend Cal. She could end up like so many in that program who seem to never improve upon their high school performances.
No joke, this is a very strong start to her outdoor campaign, end of March, and I expect to see her breaking 10 this year. Sometimes those who run similar times over years in a high school program go on to improve a lot in college with a different training group and workout schedule. And then she's grown a lot and so will take some time to adjust.
Efraimson's 9-flat/3k from indoors is roughly 9:40/3200m. She is running Arcadia 3200m as is Anna Maxwell who just ran a 10:11/3200m in a triangular meet a few days ago.
If Baxter runs the 3200m at Arcadia as she's done in the past, likely she will break 10-flat.
Also, very possible Kim Mortenson's 9:48/3200m NR will finally go down in that race.
Mary Shea was great. I went to Broughton HS in Raleigh, and Mary used to warm up with me before the 2 mile. She'd jog very slowly taking little steps, and then she'd go out and lap the field. She was incredibly nice and completely unassuming. My brother used to tag along with Mary and her older sister Julie and younger brother Mark to DC for the Cherry Blossom 10 mi., and they'd return to Raleigh with a car full of hardware.
