Look at some of the marathon-specific "special/specific blocks" that Canova has put up here and tell me it's not depletion training:

Morning : 15 min easy run + 24 km at 3'36"6 average per km
Afternoon : 15 min easy run + 24 km at 3'34"2 p/km
In that day, Ornella ran about 54 km, among them 48 about 95-98% of Marathon Pace."
In another post where he discussed the marathon schedule of some top male, perhaps Moses Mosop, he had him do a similar workout but specified that he only eat vegetables (no carbs) and drink water between the two workouts so that he could teach his body to burn fat more efficiently.
