It was in the mile/1500 when there were (a few) guys slightly more explosive than him and he wanted to run some steam out of their legs
in the 5k there wasn't anyone in the field he couldn't walk down with 200 to go (in fairness kipchoge got him at '03 worlds, though in my opinion that was a career day for kipchoge and with El G so focused on Bekele he was able to sneak up on him)
