Bernard Lagat = Regina Jacobs???

Gina is a prodigy and an academic genius like all Stanford athletes. Kip is a smart guy too with an Engineering degree, but he's not Stanford material.

WRONG!! She failed a test in 2003 and was given a 4 year ban. She immediately retired and never commented on it.

Lagat isn't quite like Regina, as Lagat was hitting the drugs while still relatively young.

You do know that Lagat has been good as far back as when he was an NCAA freshman and over the last couple of years he has gotten slower as he has gotten older.

One thing on his side is that he ran 3:26 when he was in his prime and is now running 3:36-37 caliber 1500s (3:54.9 mile) and 7:37i 3k, not the commensurate low 7:20s (or 12:59 5000m walking down Bekele with a 51 last lap), whereas Jacobs was extremely consistent over a fifteen or more year time period, running within a second or two of her 1500m pr that whole time.

The reason this is a tired position to take is he is consistently going slower and slower each year which is what you would expect. A very talented 40 year old is better than a moderately talented 35 year old. So the fact that he competes year after year provides plenty of satisfaction regarding his abilities and the effect of aging. A-sample be damned!!

More tiring is the uncanny resistance to a basic concept: If Lagat is doping now, he almost certainly has been his entire meaningful adult career. If you accept this, then it shouldn't come as a shock that he's slowing down with age. Drugs make people faster but no one's ever proposed that they freeze the clock.

On a different note, the morons comparing his 3:54 and 7:37 indoors in February to his 3:26 at the height of an outdoor season are, well... I'm convinced there's a word for this subclass of observers but it eludes me.
