If it's a calf tear, racing on it could put her out for months. I had a pretty mild tear and still get occasional pain from it over a year later; you don't want to risk that for something as unimportant as indoor worlds.

“Unfortunately I will not be able to travel to the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot,” Cain said in a statement. “Over the past week, I developed a discomfort in my lower calf. I had an MRI scan on Saturday and it was all clear, but I still feel the pain when I wear spikes and have decided not to risk making it worse in Poland. I hope to be able to run in the World Indoor Championships many times in the future. I wish all my fellow USA athletes the best and hope they bring home lots of medals from Poland.”
If she's this sensitive to a little niggle, it's going to be a long road for her.
Anyone find it odd that Salazar wasn't quoted in the statement?
She just put on a clinic and is now injured. Has a shot to medal. If the world championships didn't mean anything then lagat, rupp, and other huge American names probably wouldn't do it either.

who says it is a niggle? 'discomfort' 'pain' are the words she used. could be big pain.

Unimportant? It's a world championship meet against the best 1500m runner in almost 20 years. How much more important does it get?

So apparently athletes can no longer get injured without pulling out?
Cuz you know it would be really really hard to have out of competition testing for world championship qualifiers regardless if they end up going or not.
Mostly I just wonder if the trolls on this forum really believe that they would give PEDs to a minor, with her dad being a Dr and all.
Really- you hope this is just a bunch of losers pretending to be stupid rather than truly being THAT stupid.

Because the MRI showed nothing, and MRIs are extremely sensitive to picking up everything, even things that don't necessarily hurt. That's a niggle-- a type of pain that you can train through, maybe back off a bit/rest, and it will go away quickly.
NIke giving the finger to USATF!!! No Cain, no Rupp, no Centro, no medals!!!!!!

Could you please translate that to English.
None of you have any idea how serious the injury is or is not. Suspicions of drug use are not warranted. If I had the negative relentlessly suspicious mindset of some of you, I'd slit my wrists.
Agreed. She's very young so they don't want to risk making things worse and potentially causing greater issues. The workouts she's doing walks a fine line between a great result and injury.

This is an indoor wc, which in the grand scheme of Mary Cain's potential doesn't mean shit.
Salazar and his group are exceedingly cautious when it comes to injury, as seen with Rupp and the alterG and generally crazy approach to things.
Mary Cain wants to have a long career where she wins Olympic and Outdoor WC gold medals, she isn't going to risk all of that for a chance to get a silver or bronze indoor wc medal at 17.
let's say this:
say MC did have a hurt calf but she still went to poland and raced. Say she got hurt badly - enough to finish her off for 2014.
Salazar would be raked over the coals - he takes the best teenager in 30 years, injures her, then makes her race on that injury.
salazar would rightly be trashed for doing her in. Those crazy post race workouts, the volume, the pressure, etc...
I'm sure salazar has a big self interest in keeping this a niggle and not an injry.

MRI's are not as reliable as you think. I got two 3T MRI's on my left knee, both showed nothing. A few months later I got arthroscopic surgery and it turned out my meniscus was shredded.
Its better to be safe than sorry

It is true that nobody on here knows exactly how bad the injury is, but Cain's statement says that an MRI was all clear. As another poster said, an MRI would pick up pretty much anything serious. Suspicions of drug use don't come from nowhere...the Salazar group is known for pushing the envelope in order to gain every edge possible, something eerily similar happened last summer with Moser, and there are currently rumors flying of another NOP member testing positive. It's sad that a 17 year old girl is scrutinized like this, but that's the reality.
Mary Cain @marycainbx 12m
I might be down but I'll be back .
She's a teen, so probably smart to err on the side of caution. She's got a lot of years ahead of her to make a mark. Also, with the tighter turns on indoor tracks, that could aggravate things.

That's a fan account, not her.
The real question here, is how does a teenager get injured? Her tendons should be loose and springy.
Salazar doesn't want to be the coach who ruined Mary Cain. That's why pulling out because of injury is credible and the doping allegations are complete nonsense.

Apparently it's not a serious injury so it will be a fast recovery. With as big an event as a world championshionship that is a tough decision to make, but she did make the correct one.
