In that vein I recall a Frank Shorter comment in an old Sports Illustrated. He'd run a smart, controlled race and won (it may have been the X-C nationals circa 1970-71).

He'd worked his way up through the pack by asking "Excuse me, can I get through?" and the other competitors, realizing who he was, let him pass.

He went on to say that if he'd tried that in Europe he'd get elbowed in the teeth and knocked down.

Saladbar called Lopez Lomong a "Mother****er" and screamed "Why are you guys always out to get Galen?"

He was restrained and pulled away by some Nike guys (one called called Rod or Rob) and a USATF person. It was pretty embarrassing all around.

Serious question....Why does Alberto act like a 5 year old? Okay wait that is an insult to 5 year olds. I just don't understand why he always thinks people are out to get him and Rupp. Honestly his behavior is just going to cause other runners to be like "hey if we jostle around during the race and make Rupp uncomfortable it'll get to his head mentally since his coach freaks out when the race is not played out the way he wants it." That's not good for Rupp. Despite everything that occurred Rupp qualified for Worlds, so let the results speak for themselves.

How anyone could defend Salazar today is beyond me. He's been a cheater since his marathon days. Ask Martin Smith about Salazar dating back to the marathon training days in the late 70's in Florida. Nothing has changed. He has and is trying to make Jerry(by the way one of the nicest people you will ever meet and a damn good coach who HE recruited away from Wisconsin) look bad. The entire idea was to bring Jerry in and for Salazar to work together with him to bring US distance running to the forefront. That lasted what 2 years tops. It all changed when Solinsky beat his golden boy for the American record in the 10k. He and Galen acted the same way as this weekend but people kept it quiet. He has gone absolutely off the rails crazy since that day. The only reason and I mean only reason he has his high profile job is because he is best friends with Phil Knight. This has been going on behind close doors since 2010 where he throws tantrums and goes into Nike headquarters and demands that Jerry fall in line with supporting Rupp and NOT trying to beat him in any race. And yes, Salazar's runners were\are cheating. I'm Salazar's cheating when he ran has contributed to his heart condition.

The only, and I mean ONLY good thing to come out of this whole thing is that people now see Salazar for what he is, which makes Jerry look even better to Nike. Nothing has changed or will change as long as Salazar is at Nike.

At some point USATF you need to do what's right instead of being in the back pocket of Nike. Shame on you.

Agreed. As far as I'm concerned all that stuff is completely irrelevant with respect to the events of this past weekend. I feel no differently about everything with those two athletes than I would if it had happened to any two other individuals.

So he not only went after Jerry, somehow got Bumbalough DQed for unknown and seemingly petty, personal reasons that had nothing to do with any sort of foul, got GG initially DQed during a shady process, but he also went after good old Lopez Lomong, a two-time Olympian and former Lost Boy who, I think, epitomizes America, courage, and class. How has this not come out yet?

If this is true, what was Salazar's reaction when Webb beat Rupp in that Turkey Trot 5k a few years back? As a previous poster highlighted this a top-10 Webb moment, what did the Salazar camp really feel about Webb being in the training group?

Actually, just recently read it and you are wrong!!! Coaches don't confront other teams athletes; a civil discussion with the coach would be appropriate. Sal just doesn't think anyone should race his boys or girls.

OK I realize Salazar became unhinged this weekend, but think about those guys from Shumaker's group. They don't like to talk to Rupp, they rarely congratulate him, they never talk to him, and why?

They are jealous. And it gets tiring for Galen and Salazar. Galen is the only US distance runner > 1500m that has medalled or is even very competitive against the best in the world. Some of these guys need to grow up. Rupp has done nothing wrong. He works hard, and the better he gets, the worse these guys treat him.

Why don't some of these guys come out and say why they treat him so badly. Could it be because he constantly beats them?

Often times its a two way street, I don't know the full story nor do you. It could be that Rupp never talks to any of these guys either. I am sure some of them have been jealous at times. Its not fun losing especially when you are training hard. I also think it would be very easy to be jealous of Rupp as he has a very unique situation. He has had the same coach for a long time and was there ever a doubt that he was going to get a nice pro contract coming straight out of college. Yes he was really good but I bet he got a better then usual contract just for being Salad bars athlete. It does not matter if Schumachers athletes are jealous the whole group carries itself very well. They train hard and go out and try to beat the best. Salazar thinks that he can control everything. This is racing who cares if 10 guys go out and team together to beat your one guy. Its not okay for a coach to yell at athletes on another team. I don't care if this happens all the time, it is not okay and USATF should take some sort of action against Salad Bar.

I'd like to know more about how these two groups have interacted the past few years. Salazar's actions are clearly out of line, but I'm not satisfied to just say he's imbalanced -- there's clearly a nasty history of exchanges that have built up to this. Claims in other posts that Wisconsin athletes used to regularly prank-call Galen would turn me off of some of Schumacher's athletes if they turn out to be true (though I was already turned off of those athletes a few seasons ago for more track-related reasons). Maybe the older guys in that group have passed this attitude on to the younger guys, but my completely subjective impression is that Lomong wouldn't be a part of that.
