Instead of getting Gabriele reinstated I personally agree it is far more important that we make sure this can't happen again. If everyone just says "she's going to Poland, problem solved" then the same thing can happen again.
How did this happen? There certainly is the appearance of different rules for different people. At the very least there is almost no transparency at the very least.
The reason the athletes were so upset is that there is the perception at nearly every USATF championship that USATF officials makes capricious decisions on DQs, who gets into the meet, heat draws, or whatever it is. The athletes had finally had enough and protested in this case.
The mainstream media was picking up on this story.
Everytime with the meet entries, essentially when you look into it is becomes "the head meet ref can let into the meet whoever they want." Personally, I think there is a better way to do it than that, but don't have a problem with a somewhat flexible system to let stars in to a meet.
However, once the gun goes off, everyone needs to be treated the same at national championships. That includes which coaches get access to which areas and all the way through the DQ process. I don't feel confident that is always the case.
