Can they split the field (based on qualifying times) in two and run a "slow" heat and a "fast" heat, then combine the results? Seems a bit tacky though for a national championship.

It would certainly solve the "sit and kick" issue.
Obviously none of you hear are athletes so you do not know what is going on. The size "caps" that you are talking about are the minimum number of athletes that are allowed in each event. SO if not enough people hit the auto qual standard then they take the next fastest times to hit the minimum entry limit. Ex. mens 800 Richard Jones was accepted making him the 20th athletes because he was next on the list after there were not enough men who qualified off time to meet the minimum number of athletes.
For the 1500
They are going to go straight to finals but have two heats. SO the top 2 fastest times coming from any heat are the ones who make it to Poland. So this will solve the sit and kick because everyone will be running for a time.
You guys really need to just get the correct info before you all start arguing and making assumptions its exhausting.
Perhaps Rojo and friends indulged in too much "legal" reefer in Colorado this past weekend?

And where, exactly, do you feel we should get this info? Do you have a link or something where the general public can view this information?

If only there were some credible member of the running media around that could call up USATF and get the answers to these sorts of questions.[/quote]
Lopez's agent Tom Ratcliffe has confirmed that Lopez is qualified for the Worlds in the 3000 with hsi 13:07.00 5000 form last year indoors so that also means he's qualified for USAs in the 3000. So he can run either the 3000 or 1500 or both.

Yeah why do they continue to do this? Junior indoor nationals is at the fantastic ETSU indoor facility in Tennessee. Why couldn't the senior nationals be there too (closer to civilization and not at altitude and at a much better facility)?
Why should they kowtow to a few distance runners in the 3000 that nobody cares about? Albuquerque is one of the fastest tracks in the world and the altitude is an advantage to sprinters, hurdlers, throwers, and jumpers.
Hey Rojo,
There is credible evidence as we all know,(as we all know who's in the know) that the USATF needs a total revamping. I would love to help; there are others.
And this is a race, and the winner and everyone else has to breathe the same air. Less than ideal, but it is not like it is a major disaster. Also, I think that WIC qualifying marks might already need to be in (could be wrong), in which case it does not hurt things. And, at least indoors altitude is comfortable, just not fast. Outdoor in hot conditions is probably at least as slow and uncomfortable to boot.
Coach D. We are all in favor of EVERYONE, however we must all sacrifice - as our President says (while he's golfing on Palm Springs golf courses). You must SACRIFICE Coach D. SACRIFICE!!!! tell us you didn't vote for this thug? Ha!

An illegal advantage. Doesn't that hurt them just as much?

+1.
This facility is great. I always wondered why they don't hold more big meets there. Here's a picture:

The published schedule on the internet says nothing about heats.
God forbid that the USATF make this kind of information available to the public so that running fans know about it in advance! Running fans? What are those? The sport only exists for USATF insiders and the athletes.
I supposed would-be running fans should count themselves lucky for the crumbs they get from such special people.
Split finals will be announced Thursday morning.

Technically these are sections not heats.
Why in the world could they not have a semi?
Why should they kowtow to a few distance runners in the 3000 that nobody cares about?
This attitude is why our sport is stuck in the dark ages.
So they're having heats for the 800, heats and sections for the 400, and a single final for the 1500 according to what I read on the USATF site this morning. It looks to me as if there's about as much uncertainty inside USATF as there is on this message board.

People who would want split sections and no prelims: Rupp
People who wouldn't: everyone else
