http://www.oregonlive.com/trackandfield/index.ssf/2012/06/us_olympic_trials_galen_rupp_k.htmlRupp is a 10000 meter specialist running a 3000. He got a silver in the 10000 and finished 4th in 2013. He is very good at that distance and people embarrass themselves by denigrating his accomplishments.
His record at 5000 is much less stellar. He is a good miler but does not race it particularly well.
This race will be tough and it should be - the US is deep and there are good runners in the field. Rupp is racing shorter distances for long term development. It has helped. If he loses, he misses a goal and he can regroup later. At least he sets tough goals.
I think his biggest racing weakness is that he gets gapped with a change in pace. Races like these are good tests. There is no shame in losing to Lagat. It would be more of a shame if he skipped the championship.
I think Lagat takes it over Rupp in a sprint.

Rupp is getting kind of old (soon to be 28) to be under long term development.

1. weak field
2. got lucky
he had a 1% chance of medalling and it just so happened he got it. 99/100 times he would not medalled.
It's been said before, but just to be clear -- you have no idea what you're talking about. Please stop before you hurt yourself.
"Galen will never be loved .." - most of the true fans are thinking. What would Nike do if the fans in the stands got up and left their seats, went for a long walk when Rupp entered the track..? You want to stop the doping; get up and leave the stadium until Rupp leaves the track.

I still don't get the reaction to his DNF a couple weeks ago.
Do folks really think he was scared in that race? He had run what about 1100 of a race at about what he ran for his 2mi record. He was clearly moving out to make a move. There was no fear there. He felt a sharp pain in a race THAT DIDN'T MATTER and with US champs a couple weeks away it was completely reasonable for him to stop. Really? he should have risked his season on this race.
Then there is the workout. After determining it wasn't serious should he have stayed in his motel room for days to keep the letsrun cesspool happy? If it were me, I would have felt silly, and irritated and want to blow some dust off. I also I'm not clear what that workout even was. Perhaps it was just some moderate stuff to get some work in, and test out the foot.
I think folks also discount the balls it takes to announce that you are going for some records, and then GASP actually do it.
