No one misinterpreted that study except for you. I read it too. The author states that their adaptation is different, sure, but he also states that it is unclear why their adaptation is different. Nowhere in that paper is there any indication that it has to do with genes. You are the one who needs to keep reading. At least past the title of these research papers. Try reading the actual paper.
