clueless
incapable of comprehending that if a raw kid in nijel who coudn't be expected to handle rounds, especially off a 1'44.54 semi just 2/7 later coud run 1'41.73 in a wild race behind rudy, then a legendary champ in ereng coudn't have got close to/broken wr at that date, shows paucity of neurone
i didn't even factor in paul strolling around 1st 400 in 51-high/52-flat, which as every experienced adult fan at time expected wouda been expected split for "usual" 1'46i/1'47i runs of that era
strolling around at back & not panicking showed how awesome a shape he musta known he was in
evenning-out splits/time thrown away in going 51-high/52-flat instead of 50-high, i woud now give him full value for outdoor shape that day of, rested
1'41-mid
& more like
1'41-low

its an 8:42, with a final 57/58 400 in highschool.... really... that kind of kick in highschool on that kind of pace is amazing. I'd equate it to a 53/54 or so in a ~13 flat 5k in a diamond league race.
It's great, but it's hard to believe it's the greatest kick ever seen, which is the title of the thread.
I agree its not the greatest final kick of a race ever, but you were treating it like chump change. If only talking about highschool it has to be alteast in the top 5, possibly greatest final 3200 kick (although I don't know of many other could be better) and in comparison to the fact that A) it a highschool race B) they were running at a very fast pace for high school it should rank very high on the list of greatest kicks.
Are you aware of Ben Saarel? 8:45 with a 55 last lap.
"atleast top 5" "(although I don't know of many others)" amazing... 57 last lap 8:42.high, 55 last lap 8:45.high idk still pretty close and Saarel and Montoya to push him again at the 200 or so. -
GEB VS Tergat for the Gold medal. Listen to the announcers. Kind of wrote Haile off. Watch his finish. Heck, he watched his own finish on the big screen. Best rivalry ever.
-
By the way...the American announcers were the best in Sydney. So exciting.

Seb Coe's "kicks" were not impressive.

Here's a bunch of final kicks described in nauseating detail. One of the best LRC threads in the last 5 years.

"In your opinion...what is the greatest ending or final kick to a race you have ever seen. It can be a super close finish, or it could just be an amazing final lap."
I once saw a race where this guy went out in 3:59.1 for three laps, then kicked it in with a 1.0 second last lap. His final time was 4:00.1, for the full mile. He looked relaxed as well. It was an amazing run by the lad, yet he never got closer to breaking 4 after that. I'm also sure he was taking drugs or EPO. This all happened before the internet was invented. -
Peter Snell at Modesto 1963. Amazing finish speed.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda.....didn't.

without a doubt Steve Jones in that 10,000m when the kenyan(?) chases him down, overtakes and he responds in the last 100m. i've never seen someone finish like that before.

How about when Alberto Salazar out kicked Dick Beardsley in the last 150 meters of the 1982 Boston Marathon! I found this on YouTube. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aiPejK9R1VM

Last 100m I agree on Coe in London 1981 (running through the line) and 1984 (what a change of pace!!).
For a last lap and also for the exited commentary, this is my favorite of all time:

go to 3:00
the last 500m must equate to a great 1500m time surely -

Someone already posted a different version of this, but the view in this version I still find amazing...
GEBRSELASSIE Y TERGAT. 10000 METROS SIDNEY 2000. -
It has to be Billy Mills. I haven't seen a kick that tops it.

That's a good one but what is with all the Christian BS thrown into it.

I like Webb's 2007 US title. He had a great extra gear that year.

NOTE: No kick can be considered great if it is the result of having run the entire previous part of the race at substandard pace. So that pretty much excludes every kick that ever came at the end of a so-called "tactical" championship race.
You want to impress me? Go balls out for the entire race AND THEN show off your speed at the end. -
