HP......I had a bout with sharp RA pain about 3 weeks out that lasted 2 days and then was fine.....and this past week at 6 weeks out I have been having pressure/balloon feeling in my left side near the outside of the RA....no Sharp RA pain but definilty soreness....The first time I felt the sharp RA pain was when I started doing the Pool stuff.....and now the RA stuff I am feeling has been since I started doing lots of ab stuff....Bicycles, Crunches, Reverse Crunches , Obliques etc...and also since I have been swinging a bat with a chute on it for resistence.....It really flared up both times I went to the batting cages ...1st time I took 15 swings at about 50% then next time about 30 swings at 80%...So IT seems to be when you start a new activity or ramp up the rehab you will get inflamation which seems to be normal......What I do is take the day off from swinging the bat or doing ab stuff If I feel to inflammed and the next day will feel much better....Just part of the long process......
For me I feel I am ready to play ball ..came close to playing Monday the 24th but decided to wait one more week.....but now my team was bounced out of playoff contention so I wont be playing until Fall ball around 9/15 or so.....Ill take that time to start core x and build up strength on the stuff that is inflamming me....AB stuff and swinging
Oh yea and the Core X takes forever...at least 3 weeks
Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or "

Those of you that had surgery with Dr. Meyers, is he only operating out of Hahnemann or is there another hospital that he uses at times?
I've read so many pages from all sorts of sites and can't recall if it was Dr. Meyers that operates at different locations. -
Turkdog-
Everything i have read is he operates out of Hahnemann. When i see an athlete get operated on it always says Philly as the location. I just think he is "set up" there with the full team and protocol. I can not imagine he would operate around the country. -
Albert-
Nice.... I just wanted to double check. There are some people that just shouldn't post anything!!!
I looked up AIS on youtube and found some interesting stretches. I'm on board with this stuff. We'll see exactly what i need to focus on after I'm on the other side but these exercise, I belief, are going to be essential. I tried what I could remember at the gym, hip and hamstrings. It was different but felt nice though. I started doing reverse bridges yesterday with a medicine ball between my knees, one foot on the ground the other leg straight out, hands in the air. This is my new favorite. I felt sorer than normal this morning, cant tell if it was the AIS or the reverse bridges.
I also incorporated the resistance band between my ankles when doing bridges, that targets the abductors, right? -
I'm not sure about others who went to Germany, but I had 1-2 Heparin shots each day I was there.
-
Hey trukdog-
the book on AIS is not as good as the videos. Google for videos and follow along or e-mail me and i will send you. AIS demonstration shows you the pressure you should be using when doing so. It takes some learning.
Remember 3 things: 1) exhale on stretch 2) contract opposing muscle 3)hold for 2 seconds and return to starting point.
On hamstring stretches i can go over my head now. The stretch guy i went to yesterday was amazed. this has unlocked my pelvis more than anything i ever did.
Use the bands on bridges and make sure you go on your heels. when you get to the top punch each side of your glutes (my FMS guy makes me do that to jar the muscle)...
Also do the squats with the bands on too. Also side walking as well...All great.
The only thing i have left is my other injuries which i know are described in this article. I broke my right ankle twice and now have excessive pronation and all the other distortions that come with it. My FMS guy is going to design a program to resolve it. I hurt my achilles in the Marines and this is how it all started....

CoreX has probably the worst customer service of any company/product I have ever dealt with. They rarely, if ever, respond to emails. As well, you have absolutely no recourse to question how the product should be used, anything to avoid, etc. They don't even recomend where to go to get those answers.
Still a great product, but completely lacking on customer service.
I'm fairly certain they charge by the room and not the person so you shouldn't bear any additional costs by bringing your wife.. It's not a necessity to have an extra person, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.. no pun intentended.
The night of surgery I walked 3 miles or so w/ pretty limited pain (on meds). With that said, waking up the next morning sucked.. Was very sore, but as you get moving everything loosens up.
I'm 3 months post op last week and finally at 100 percent. No ab/groin pain and I can finally sprint pain free.. Something I haven't been able to do in a year and a half.. Best of luck.

Hey MeLLoDraMa - good for you!!
Can i ask what they did with your nerves? Did she remove them/it or are yours intact??
Were you bi-lateral or just the one side??
thanks -
Hello All! Well I am 5 hrs post op on my left side SH. The right side repair was yesterday. I must say I am in much less pain than I was expecting!
Dr. UM and her team here are awesome. They make you feel very comfortable. After the first surgery yesterday I probably could have walked 3 miles like Mello, but probably only walked 3/4 a mile or so. Felt great to move around. As I was getting ready to go to bed the pain seemed to be getting much worse and I was really worried about having the other surgery the next morning. To my surprise I woke up with very little pain got right out of bed and walked around for about 20 minutes before they came and got me for round two!
I was given a Herapin shot before the surgery but have not been told yet about taking any others. They made me get compression stockings to wear. I will be seeing Dr. UM in about an our so maybe I will find out more on that then.
London---They charge for a double room or someone to stay with you...83 euros per night. I knew it wasn't going to be cheap BUT worth it. It is a very nice facility...and I find the food not near as bad as others have said. I couldn't imagine staying at a hotel.....especially having a bilateral repair. I guess it all depends on how much pain you can take.
I also would not want to jump on a plane back to the US just a day or two after surgery(ies). I will be staying here in munich and prague for 8 more days. I decided to make it a medical vacation!
If anyone has any questions please ask away.
Mello....not sure I could sit at a football game either...maybe in a few days! haha
All in all...Dr. UM is GREAT!!

Hey Garrett - good news for you, would you say the pain you are now feeling is 'different' from your original pain and is more from your incision?
Did she remove your nerve or was it OK?
thanks -

A person accompanying the patient pays 83.30 Euro per night per my quote for services. -
Garrett, glad to hear your surgery with Dr. UM was a success!
Albert and JC, thanks for the reassurance regarding my RA pain. Today I still feel the pain but it is not as sharp or as frequent and I am confident it is going to go away. Depending on how I feel later today I may try to play hockey again tonight.
Albert, also great to hear you are feeling so well. I may try to see the AIS gurus, as I work in NYC. And JC, excellent that you are close to getting back on the field.
Finally, thanks to all on the Core-X feedback. I'm reassured that I'm not getting hosed now. -
HP-
I am all for you rebounding and playing tonight. You are past the point where you are going to unwind anything. It is now a mind game....One i am still playing on occasion.
This week i added abdominal bicycle crunches and did them for 4 straight days....well day 3 was a toughie and morning 4 was even tougher....but by noon it had dissipated and i forgot about it....
Keep up the good fight HP -
I played last night and am fine today! The pain I was experiencing two days ago and yesterday is completely gone. Just the normal mild soreness today that I always feel after a good rehab workout. I definitely wasn't playing at 100% effort/speed but played harder than my first time out. I am very psyched.
Meyers is the man.
Oh, and my Core-X arrived yesterday! -
HP-
Awesome news and i am very happy for you. You are not going to come apart....Easy to say but tough for anyone who has had this to believe sometimes. The only thing to worry about is the occasional bouts of soreness and inflammation.
Keep up the great work. When i heal these lower leg injuries i hope to play some type of sport.
I find that my lower legs....calves, anterior tibialis are so darn tight. I am working on getting those lengthened.... -
Hi Guys,
Anyone else get a hard cord-like vein in their abdomen? I have one (can't see it, but can feel it) vertically oriented, about 4-6 inches long, starting at my scar, going up to the belly button.. and it feels kind of like the thickness of a red licorice rope. Dr. Meyers says I it's probably a thrombosed vein, and that i should arrange a phone appointment w/ Marcia, but haven't heard back yet on the appt. time.
Anyone else go through this?
Thanks! -
Yup....when i saw Meyers at 6 weeks he laughed at me when i asked him what this wire like thing was running down. I called it a guitar string. He said it was a vein of some sort and it would disappear. i assume on me it was because i had a full detachment and the vein had to be taught as well when reattached.
Long story short...it is gone. -
Kent,
I had that too... freaked me out at first when I was getting some ART therapy, but I don't notice it anymore. -
I'd essentially given up on insurance covering my medical expenses with Dr. UM. Well, a cheque showed up yesterday from Cigna and they essentially paid the whole nut - $11,000. There were some expsnses not covered, but this is far beyond what I would have expected.
