Any time you hire ANYONE you take on a huge risk, so hiring someone that was in the top .0000001% of something/ANYTHING minimizes risk because you can assume that if someone is hard working and driven.
One more point - Webb will generate interests for the rest of this life. When people Google Alan Webb in 10 years they will know where he works. A business wants to hire someone who is/was high profile because it states that high profile, successful, driven individuals are part of the organization.
