Well, the Diamond League Final, and, effectively, the 2014 season finale are upon us, bringing to a close the deepest and most competitive year of high jumping in modern history. Though none have yet managed to break Sotomayor's legendary mark, not one or two but six men (one indoors only) have broken the 2.40m height, tearing apart and rewriting the old top ten list (plus other jumpers who are nipping at the heels of the 2.40 men, like Erik Kynard). All of the major player are in this field (minus Aleksey Dmitrik, the indoor 2.40 man) but only two are poised to win the diamond: Bohdan Bondarenko of Ukraine and Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar (with 16 and 12 points, respectively, to Ukhov's six). Despite flashes of brilliance from the field, Ukhov in particular, there has been no question that the real battle is between the former two. Barshim has shown endless flights of brilliance, clearing monstrous heights with awes-inspiring ease, leaving those who watch him with little doubt that this young man has more than enough ability to dethrone Sotomayor, but his erratic limbs have kept this promise unfulfilled, as he been made mortal when the bar is set in rarefied air. Bondarenko (though many seem to forget his achingly close attempts at 2.46 at the end of the 2013 season) has shown less flash in his lesser jumps, but has truly elevated the excitement of the sport with his gambles and gambits, making the sport almost as much as mental as a physical competition. Bondarnko's consistency and control are his primary weapons against the elastic young Qatari
Let's hope this last meet lives up to the greatest season in history
