I know at triathlon Nationals they have a relay the day after the individual races. It's optional, but a lot teams just do it for fun/to redeem their previous team placing. I think a lot of college students would enjoy this!

He's not going to be out for 3 weeks with a broken fibulla if that's what it is. Probably 3 months before he can run on it.
I had my fibulla broken for me while playing soccer. I was able to limp around on it until it displaced. After that it was just a bad idea to put any weight on it.
I think if they can fit an Ekiden into the season instead of so many high end meets that would be great. Maybe toward the end of the season. If it is too close to regional meets, then mid-season and get a better caliber of team strength.
I'm a life-long runner and competitive running fan, and find the "team competition" aspect of both track and XC to be UTTERLY uninteresting. I might be a LITTLE curious, after the fact, about what team won a national-level college XC race (not ever true for track), but the fact that there is a team competition increases the entertainment value of the race while it's being run by about zero. Who does find the team competition interesting? The teams, their coaches, and their families. Plus some unknown number of serious fans (and maybe not even a majority or significant majority?). And something less than 1% of non-serious (i.e., potentially serious) fans, I'm guessing!
So, my opinion, obviously, is that relay distance events at all levels would be nearly infinitely more interesting than existing XC meets.
