"Power trip over the weak!"Does he even weigh 125?
This sounds over the top. A champion athlete who is a drunk cop who beats up on people in his spare time?
Doesn't anyone here feel sad that Kiprop might miss his shot at El Guerrouj's record because of this?
I love it how letsrunners take a police report, let alone a Kenyan one at face value.
This is why it cracks me up when people balk at the idea that Kenyan or Ethiopian distance runners would ever use PEDs. Never mind that a number of them have been caught over the years; just look at their off-the-track behavior. I was in Atlanta in the 1990s when a former C-team Ethiopian named Arega Abraha went to prison for the murder of a cousin who refused to follow through on an arranged marriage, and I think it involved an axe. We know that Kenyan runners have cheated on or stabbed their wives, caroused, and now this shit. Is it really hard for the pollyannas to think that some of them might even knowingly take drugs to get faster? Come on. It's already been established that they lie about their ages whenever they can get away with it. They CHEAT just like other people.

Not at all. Kiprop will never match El Guerrouj's marks.

Haron Lagat has stated on twitter that there is more to the story coming out so we should perhaps withhold judgement until the picture becomes more clear

Kiprop does have a history of problems when it comes to alcohol and it was obviously evident in this incident.
Kiprop will not go to jai for this incident. Like another post stated, in a few weeks this will be old news and swept under the rug. Very similar to Ezekiel Kemboi and the stabbing of his girlfriend.
In my opinion it is not the most sensible thing for someone who visits Iten often to sprout these rumours as if they are pure fact. You talk about Kemboi as if that is a fact that he stabbed his girlfriend. When the over whelming majority of Iinformed opinion in the Kenyan running scene (in Kenya) is that the women (who was not his girlfriend) was an extortionist and Kemboi was completely innocent.
Again in this new case you are talking as if this is a fact and that this has happened. Yet so far we have no facts at all - just one newspaper which is known for sensationalism and general poor journalism and you have taken it as fact because you want to be seen as the person who broke the news first.
There is no accountability in Kenyan journalism and they are free to write what they want whether it is true or not - (some of your favourite people in Iten have been victims of this vicious tactic) and the fact that someone who claims to be a fan of the sport and of kenyan runners is so quick to jump on this bandwagon does not help!
It looks like Kiprop lives his life with such high ethical standards that he would never do something like take performance enhancing drugs.
"There is no accountability in Kenyan journalism and they are free to write what they want whether it is true or not"
Hey, just like American journalism!
I think doping and being violent, killing people or whatever have absolutely nothing in common.

No, you're not the only one.
http://www.usada.org/effects-peds/Here are some alleged quotes from Asbel Kiprop, denying any assault and claiming a misunderstanding:
“I am shocked that the media went ahead to publish stories that puts me in bad light and misleading. We were from watching the English Premier League match between Chelsea and Liverpool FC that ended late at night. We were sure of not getting food in camp and decided to look for a restaurant to take dinner and that was the only restaurant operational by the time.”
“We approached the guard (Mukuria) who was manning the main door but we differed sharply. Moments later, he allowed us in after we informed him that we wanted to take dinner. But I was surprised with the lies that was propagated by the media.”
“I am a trained police officer, understand the law which I swore to safeguard and, above all, I cannot go out there and harass my fans. I have a big dream for 2014 in my athletics career which I bank on my Kenyan fans, Mr Mukuria included, for support.”
“After the incident, I received calls from people identifying themselves as journalists. But I refuted all the claims, they instead decided to malign my name. I think they associated the pistol with work as a policeman.”
These quotes are from a new article in Kenya's Standard Digital:
I'd like to believe Kiprop, and think that he and other top Kenyan runners could be subject to smear campaigns by people looking for payoff money, however I'm skeptical and think the jury is still out.
Perhaps he'll be able to run the upcoming XC race and will make further statements.
We've started a thread with Kiprop denying the allegations here:

We felt it was important for him to have a thread with his adamanetn denial as the subject line:

In Africa "the weak" doesnt mean skinny.
Kiprop will probably not spend any time in jail or any any fine, and will get away with his lies. Corruption and power go hand in hand, and is endemic. Kiprop is a very wealthy man by Kenyan standards, and therefore can never be prosecuted.

He's definitely not going to jail. noway/nohow
You're right about the Kenyan media, probably the most free and unaccountable in Africa. Some of their tactics and stuff they put out would make British tabloids blush.
Kiprop, on the other hand, is a prime example of what happens when some come into money without a decent education. At least America's collegiate system prepares their athletes for success.

Man, I can never wrap my head around American logic. " Kenyan loses temper/cheats on wife/gets into a bar fight ... there you have it, proof he's on PEDs". Are you deliberately stupid or do you honestly believe Kenyans don't share the same spectrum of emotions and behaviour as other human beings? Shock on you, Kenyans love their football with beer and goat barbecue. The sports bar scene can get very boisterous. In Kenya, people also get drunk and disorderly. It doesn't mean anything other than someone had too much to drink or they can't hold their liquor. It's the same all over the world.
Whatever happened with this story? Fabrication by media, or Asbels manager made the story go away?
