She was naked in a Nike ad?
Yes she was- completely naked.
It wasn't a clear frontal shot but she was bending down, from the side, in the rain and naked.

Yep, over and over the sunshine and lollipops routine is how she represented herself because, clearly, she has shown there is more to her depths given the depression and all else. Witness the interview after the OT when she said she was running for the memory of her dead dog Otis. She was responsible for the image she portrayed and she did it justice every time she opened her mouth: she sounded like she was three sandwiches short of a picnic.

She strikes you as vapid because she said she dedicated a run to a deceased pet she probably loved? What exactly is "sunshine and lollipops"?
You wouldn't be saying any of this crap if she weren't blond and attractive. She may not be a Rhodes scholar but even if she could be objectively labeled a moron, that is not how she sets out to portray herself. Not everyone with a pretty face has the composure and mien to make for a captivating interview. She's an athlete, not a trained actress or PR type and no matter how many swimsuit pics she posed for (who wouldn't? If I could be paid just to show more skin I'd sure do it) she's not someone you should be looking toward when you're hankering for an exchange about string theory or the economic structure of Persia in the 8th century CE.
Go ahead and find some youtube interviews with her and then tell me why she couldn't string anything substantially coherent together. Plenty of good looking men and women athletes figure out how to conduct interviews that convey decent information. It's called marketing and it's essentially what shoe contracts are all about. Don't forget about the times she couldn't even keep track of how many laps a 1500m consisted of. And she wasn't that attractive - the closer you looked the more you could see how she dyed her hair - there wasn't any there there. Just like Gertrude Stein said about Oakland. Poor Suzy.
how many times? wasn't it just once indoors she miscounted?

OK, now I'm convinced that you're a jealous female. She's not all that pretty, but she sure needs to learn how to speak like a pretty person. And you're arguing that she didn't market herself well? How many Nike or shoe ads were you in? How many pinup calendars and swimsuit issues? I'd say she did pretty well, more than other elite runners have. That was an accident? Or a result of intentionally coming across as stupid?
I'm still waiting for a link to that naked pic of Suzy that Nike produced -- considering their high profile I'm amazed I haven't come across that one.
You are a dipshit for judging Suzy or anyone on the basis of post-competition interviews. That's like judging the temper or character of an NBA player based on something he says to a reporter right after being ejected from a game or something. She seems pretty knowledgeable and coherent -- and more to the point, candid and unpretentious -- here:
http://running.competitor.com/2012/02/news/beyond-the-finish-line-exclusive-interview-with-suzy-favor-hamilton_46839Lauren Fleshman is pretty damn smart. Remember the interview where she said "Just balls, man!" or something close to that, I believe after winning a U.S. championship 5K? Do you think she's vulgar or loopy based on that tidbit?
Goodwill Games 1500m in Seattle. Screwed up the laps. That's outdoors, mind you.
Mutual respect between world class athletes that have competed/compete in similar events makes for great dialog between them. Vigil her coach knew Suzy from her Reebok days and probably appreciates the exchange.
She kicked with 700 to go at the 1990 Goodwill Games 1500. Thought it was 300 to go.
Nobody knows the real Suzy Favor Hamilton better than probably her husband. Her interviews were all posing and playing to an image of the magnetic, pretty, up-beat, happy girl. She could have very well mastered a career as a mid-major market city news reporter had she not had been a track prodigy.
Obviously deep down she had some major issues with depression. For a long time the attention and adrenaline competing at the world class level kept her going and when it ended she lost it for a while. It happens to many athletes in all sports.
Its hard to feel sorry for her since she has lived an extremely nice lifestyle from the time she graduated and never really had to struggle for finances like the majority of elite American runners that did in her era. And there will always be the feeling that she never "earned" that. But who decides that? She had a market value.
I don't see the point of breaking her down any more than she already has done to herself. She is moving forward with her life and I wish the best to her. And if Brenda Martinez wants to hang out with her who cares?

This is spot on.
Um, read who I was responding to - that post thought she only did it indoors (which she did) and I pointed out that she also miscounted outdoors which is even more revealing. Less than 4 laps and she miscounts. So, yes... multiple times.
what was the indoor race she miscounted?
Early 90's in Virginia against Boulmerka - can't recall name of meet.

I'm a guy but I feel like guys get away with it more. I have so many guy friends that sleep with everyone they can and I still consider them good people for the most part and I know other people do too. I think I'd feel different about a girl doing that
Do you have close female friends? I do. They always openly talk about which guys they are trying to sleep with. They definitely have more sex partners than my male friends. Nobody thinks of them as bad people either.
