Best Thread: I know that the thread I'm voting for is quite a bit behind in the voting, but it is perhaps only fitting that if this were a race you might say that my thread of the year has not only fallen behind, but was in fact lapped. I am hopeful that my vote for thread of the year will in fact, come from behind and end up the winner.

I can't speak for others, but I'm an old miler.
I suppose a world record is a better performance, but I took the question to mean something along the lines of which race was the most exciting/notable/etc., and I'd say there were several exciting aspects of the race for me:
1) The fastest 1500 in a long time - reminiscent of the days of Hicham El Guerrouj
2) Everyone said, "Holy cow, Asbell Kiprop might break the world record next year."
3) A 10000 world champion goes 3:28.
The only one of those statements that isn't bettered by the marathon performances this year is number 3. That's 2 vs 1. So I still don't understand why that race was better to you. -
Consider that the marathon is one of the least exciting events in sport. I rank the Kiprop-Farah duel, all of the US middle distance medals, the HS dream mile, several Cain races, and Foot Locker boys ahead of it.

Race of the year is between the Monaco 1500, Kipsang's world record, or the duel in Chicago.

You didn't like Geb vs Bekele vs Farah?
Great race, but not one of those guys is even close to contending for best in the world at that distance.
A reasonable part of the "Race of the Year" title is that it has to involve the best in the event.
There were no doubt some great tactical duels in your local Turkey Trot. -

My favorite race was the WC W 1500 - so many story lines, and two of my favorite runners - Jenny Simpson and Mary Cain.
JBS had been running strongly all year, but aregawi was the undisputed favorite. Could Cain medal? She had kicked down world class fields and had not found a limit yet...many felt that if she were within reach with 300 to go she had a shot at a medal.
So the gun goes off nd JBS goes to the front. She leads though 1100, when the favorite got past her. JBS held strong...then a Kenyan tried to get past...JBS accelerated and kept her back. the kenyan tried again with 180 to go and JBS accelerated again...
aregawi got an unsurpassable lead, tho JBS looked great in the last 60 and was catching up.
watch it again - it is a slow race but the shifting made it fun to watch. -

why? what did he post of interest?
monaco 1500m, plus for american interest the m/w 800/1500 at wc.
precious roy is the poster of the year because he knows a lot and writes it up, rare qualities on the boards these days.
agip posts on lots of different topics, he writes well and is clear and thoughtful in his responses without being rude or sophomoric. In 2013 he was also prolific which is why he wins for 2013. That's why. -

And this reply by you is indicative of why you win this year. -
Some great races have already been listed, but doesn't a new marathon world record have to at least make Honorable Mention?

Flagpole is the poster of the year. He has a lock on it as long as he posts here.
