Reading that book as a 35 yr old runner was pathetic.
Boring, dated, and simple are the first few words that come to mind.
Then you obviously don't understand what it's like to be a slave to the mileage. You can get defensive and act like you really do, but you don't.
I'm not saying the book is perfect, or that it couldn't of been written better. But, for a collegiate athlete that puts in consistently 100+ mile weeks. It couldn't describe that scenario better
Word. I know it's not superbly written. I actually love that the reviewer calls "fluff". I think it fits the book well. There needed to be a bit of over-the-top(ness) to it.
For me the book is all about what you sacrifice as a runner with big dreams. And the book did that perfectly for me.
Overrated, probably. But the book as that "thing", that element that cannot be explained. It has that it factor that makes it an all-time classic for most that think back to the time they were eating ramen, putting in high mileage, and should have been sleeping with their smoking hot girlfriend at the time instead of letting themselves fall asleep at 9:30.
And for those that that are in high school and haven't been there yet. The books gives a glimpse into the future that should give any serious runner a hard-on at the thought that THAT WILL BE THEM!
