The Washington State situation just goes to reinforce (again) that track coaches are disrespected yearly. And the athletes are also. Unless, the other two candidates are not what they wanted there is no administrative reason for not announcing the new hire. We know that athletes on the WSU are transferring out due to their uncertainty, so the team could be gutted. Not sure why the WSU AD can't make a decision. Reflects poorly on the sport.
The decision for most AD's to "wait" to hire new coaches is the simple fact the longer they wait the more money they save in the mean time. AD's care about money above all and if they have a coaching vacancy they can use the extra cash to make sure other area's aren't over budget or to put some band-aids on a gun shot...
If you look at in business terms, you fire or lose one of your VP's or Manager's, you have someone below them keep things in order while you take a few months to save the salary of the previous person, that could also be used to offer a higher salary for the next hire as well, or pay bonuses for current Spring Coaches that are performing at high levels.
